(500) Days of Summer is a romantic comedy released in 2009. It is certainly a cut above the rest of modern rom-coms, but this review will focus on the story’s setting in lieu of the plot.

Though there is only one mention of the city in its dialogue, specifically a quip, this film — as so many other Hollywood productions — takes place in Los Angeles. Since America’s moviemaking industry is based in LA, filming “on location” is cheaper to do locally instead of sending the crew and sets elsewhere. Plus, being remarkably diverse in landscape and architecture helps the City of Angels double as almost any other place across the globe. (more…)

A lot has been said about Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho as well as Mary Harron’s screen adaptation. Many in our sphere love this story for a multitude of reasons, and many more dismiss it. Both sentiments have their merits, but I’d like to add yet another take: Patrick Bateman is what you get when you fully embrace the modern era’s decadence and status quo. (more…)

Though I am certainly no Emil Cioran scholar, I can write about him from the point of view of having been impacted by him. Would-be Cioran enthusiasts beware, for his influence is not necessarily a bright one; after all, his ideas belong to a school of thought known as philosophical pessimism. Though I am sure he would hate it, I am going to attempt to extract some positivity from his writings.

Do you ever find yourself bored on the couch, surfing nearly-identical streaming services or, if you still have it, cable? Do you succumb to watching something you’ve already seen in lieu of trying something new? In an era of content overload, there’s never been so little to watch or read. The sheer amount of garbage that is pumped onto screen and page alike almost seems by design, and it probably is.

Luckily, we have Counter-Currents’ Trevor Lynch book series, the latest of which is Trevor Lynch’s Classics of Right-Wing Cinema. John Fante’s Ask the Dust is one of my favorite stories, although it feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure. I rarely reread books, usually favoring something new instead, but have made an exception for what has been referred to as the Los Angeles novel. Though the tale takes place during the Great Depression, there’s something about it that exemplifies urban California living, and certain aspects of it feels like it could have been written merely a decade ago. Fante’s alter ego, Arturo Bandini, encounters several instances of racial strife throughout the story that serve as an eerie template for the future of Los Angeles, the United States, and Western civilization as a whole. The life of Charles Augustus Lindbergh is a benchmark of Western Civilization. Sadly, a reading of his resume gives one the feeling that men of this caliber, or the attitudes of the times they lived in, have been permanently relegated to the past. But on his birthday, it’s worth highlighting the achievements of his profound life, both cemented accomplishments as well as those unrealized, and use them as an inspiration and template for our own lives and the future of our civilization. It’s hard to be the first at anything these days, but here is Spencer J. Quinn’s The No College Club, which is billed as the first white-positive young adult (YA) novel. Based on the story’s contents, hopefully it’s the first of many in a much-needed genre.

Having been the furthest thing from “bookish” as an adolescent, I’ve never read anything else in the YA sphere, but that doesn’t prevent me from having tangentially absorbed a decent amount of the genre. Our modern era fast-tracks much youth-oriented fiction to the bookshelves and silver screens across the globe, for it acts as a near-perfect vehicle to poison the minds of future generations. J. A. Nicholl’s collection of 15 weird tales was published by Counter-Currents in 2017. The stories perfectly synthesize the various sentiments and viewpoints of those on the Dissident Right with horror-based literature; most importantly, this is done without beating the reader over the head with politics or painstakingly proving a point. To put it as plainly as possible, Nicholl’s writing and storytelling abilities are superb, and this collection is a must-read for anyone even remotely interested in the genre. Jef Costello’s Heidegger in Chicago: A Comedy of Errors is a philosopher’s novel. Luckily, being (no pun intended) a scholar on Heidegger is by no means a prerequisite but, by the same token, you certainly would never find this book in the young adult section of a Dissident Right bookstore. A truthful description of the story is most accurately summarized on the book’s back cover: “What would have happened if the notoriously obscure German philosopher Martin Heidegger had visited America . . . he would have been misunderstood.” (more…)

Did you know that America’s involvement in the First World War was fought and won primarily by black soldiers? I didn’t, but now I do thanks to David O. Russell’s Amsterdam. Please, whatever you do, don’t make the same mistake I did and pay money to view this film; it is pure regime propaganda wrapped in a bowtie of high production values, beautiful stars, and an A-list director. I remember a time — long ago, almost antediluvian — when a consumer could go on Amazon and simply purchase a Greg Johnson book. As an avid film enthusiast, one of my first Counter-Currents acquisitions was Trevor Lynch’s White Nationalist Guide to the Movies. The book’s perspective was fresh, and the elevation of vaguely Right-Wing themes or undertones in certain films was something that prompted me to go back and rewatch several of the movies examined. After spending one year living in the American South as a young adult, I swore I’d never go back nor have anything to do with it in a cultural sense; the place just doesn’t resonate with me on any level.
