This was called the miasma theory of disease. Guided by this theory, they sought to build their cities away from sources of bad air, such as swamps and other bodies of stagnant, foul-smelling water. Royal Air Farce
As seasoned military historians will know, many of Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots during the Second World War were Polish. Today, however, those plucky air aces from a country that historically has been more warred against than warlike (and so know how to defend like furies) would find no place for them in the RAF, and they would be unlikely to get their wings not because of any aerial incapacity, but because they are the wrong color. Salut! Salut! Salut! We had heard enough greetings, so we got out of the car in the village of Dömös and changed into military clothes. We were given sports shirts by Légió Hungária (LH) and quickly fell in with their group.
They set a fast pace walking uphill. We had been looking forward to it all the way in the car, and so, despite the difficulties — I hadn’t slept that night, my friend was coming off a 12-hour night shift, and another friend had been driving for several hours — we set off after them with a strong sense of motivation. As a man who has far more historical perspective than most people merely by dint of the fact that I’m much older than most people, I’m startled by how drastically public attitudes have changed toward alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana since I was a beardless, clueless, and curious youth in the 1960s. Part 2 of 2 (Part 1 here)
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán set himself a very high rhetorical bar with his speech in Transylvania in July. In one sense it could be seen as a sort of “coming attractions” for his Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) speech in Texas, which he gave less than two weeks later. (more…)
