Remembering Lawrence R. Brown
(September 1, 1903 – March 31, 1986)
Greg Johnson
Today is the birthday of Lawrence Roscoe Brown, the author of The Might of the West, which the great Revilo P. Oliver proclaimed “one of the fundamental books of our century.” You can read Oliver’s review of The Might of the West here at Counter-Currents:
- Revilo P. Oliver, “Lawrence R. Brown’s The Might of the West.”
However, the fact that Brown wrote The Might of the West was practically the only thing anybody knew about him. Even his birth and death dates were unknown. Thus I put our own genealogical sleuth Margot Metroland on the Brown case, which yielded a basic biography around which we hope further information will accrete:
- Margot Metroland, “Who Was Lawrence R. Brown: Biographical Notes on the Author of The Might of the West.”
If you are interested in grand historical narratives and “metanarratives,” The Might of the West is obligatory reading along with such writers as Vico and Spengler.
