The third season of The Handmaid’s Tale is well-crafted in almost every way. The cinematography is outstanding. The dialogue is good. The acting is excellent. Its fictional universe is interesting, and it has a dark, dystopian beauty to it. However, the season doesn’t hang together. I got quite bored with it and stopped watching after getting enough information to scrape together a review. (I know what happens in the rest because I cheated and read the plot summaries after watching two-thirds of the season.)

Today I wish to talk about Charles de Gaulle and some seldom-examined aspects of the Algerian Crisis that spanned 1954 to 1962. But in order to edge into all that, I first have to talk about one of my favorite and oft-viewed movies, The Day of the Jackal (1973; the original version).
De Gaulle himself is a character in that film, since the whole plot revolves around assassination attempts on him in the early 1960s. (more…)

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn seemed to write novels like a historian. It’s as if he didn’t always know which details were more important than others, and so erred on the side of quantity rather than quality. Not that his novels don’t contain great stuff – rather, they tend to lead the reader through long and uneven passages in between the moments of greatness. (more…)

Blue Velvet: The Lost Footage
The Criterion Collection’s new Blu-ray of Blue Velvet contains 53 minutes of lost footage. Does this footage in any way alter my reading of the film’s psychological and political meaning? The short answer is no, but read on.
Blue Velvet was released as a two-hour film, but originally it was about two hours and fifty minutes long. The material Lynch removed is not raw footage that was never part of the film. (more…)

Part 3 of 5 (Part 1 here, Part 2 here, Part 4 here)
JM: Our laws were written in that way to say this is what we have, a white country, and European nation. It’s only recently, because of mass transportation, that we’ve had so many nonwhites moving in. It’s an unheard of idea to say we don’t like that. (more…)

Unlike Inglorious Basterds (2009) and Django Unchained (2012), which were both drenched in violence against whites, Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, is a surprisingly wholesome and pro-white film that pays homage to old Hollywood and white male movie stardom.
The main characters are washed-up actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double and driver, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). (more…)

After a summer hiatus, John Morgan and Survive the Jive join Fróði Midjord on the latest Guide to Kulchur to discuss Midsommar, a recently-released movie about a group of American anthropology students and a deeply traumatized woman who visit a neo-pagan cult practicing a faith based on the ancient Nordic religion in present-day Hälsingland, Sweden, where they discover that the cult’s interest in them goes far beyond the merely academic. Part 2 of 5 (Part 1 here, Part 3 here)
JM: That brings me to another question. As you were saying, having a culture and civilization, I would argue, that is one of the better ones in the world, leads to the claim of “white supremacy” being flung around. Is there any validity to that argument? That you’re just a white supremacist, etc. I have my own response to this, but I’m curious how you’d respond. (more…)

What to do about Tommy Robinson has long been a moral quandary for the Dissident Right. The purist position was, “No, the guy is a narcissist conman controlled by Zionist Jews” – which no one on our side really disputes.

“Crush White Nationalist evil!” is the conservative answer to the El Paso shooting.
The overwhelming majority of conservatives have called for the government to treat White Nationalism like Islamic terror. Logically, this would mean drone strikes against American Renaissance conferences. But the conservatives who advocate for this drastic action are self-aware enough not to go that far – they just want the government to censor speech they call racist.
