We are living in remarkable times in which historic events have become so commonplace that they are forgotten within weeks. That won’t be the case for January 6, 2021. During the ongoing proceedings stemming from the fraudulent 2020 US presidential election, most of the actors involved have eschewed the topic of race. This is both good and bad. It’s good because if one side avers that race has been a decisive factor in this controversy, the other side would go ballistic and distract from the cases President Trump and his allies are bringing before the courts, the legislatures, and the American public. The greatest accomplishments in politics are not always noticed or remembered. Often we take worthy actions for granted if they are done behind the scenes by men who wish not to call undue attention to themselves. Such men presided smoothly over good times and made it look easy. President Eisenhower is a good example of strong, classy, conservative leader who did right by his country and his people without making a big fuss about it. (more…)

“Never trust a conservative.” As an oft-repeated mantra in Paul Christensen’s recent novel The Hungry Wolves of Van Diemen’s Land, this sentiment accuses so-called conservatives as being closeted liberals who are only a few decades behind on the liberal curve. As our civilization lurches leftward, what seemed cutting edge liberal years ago (for example, black-white miscegenation), conservatives now consider to be mainstream and healthy . . . or at least they don’t have the courage to challenge it.
