Browsing online lately, I came across an infant joke-collection I had once owned as a child. Called The Pink and Wobbly Joke-Book, and sporting a cartoon image of a large strawberry blancmange with eyes and grinning mouth on the cover, every last joke within related invariably to the twin concepts of pinkness and/or wobbliness. Most were complete rubbish, along the lines of “What flies and wobbles? A jellycopter!!!”, (more…)

In 1995, Jonathan Bowden self-published his Collected Works in 6 volumes (London: Avant-Garde, 1995), edited by Jürgen Schwartz, one of Bowden’s pen names. The six volumes comprise 27 distinct books, 12 of which had been previously published. Altogether, the Collected Works contain more than 2,600 pages of rare early Bowden. (more…)

Come with me on a trip through the past. I’ll season it with a soundtrack if you click on the links, so it will be a bit like a John Hughes movie experience, but with the subject of my less than stellar life some forty years ago. And with even better music, since I picked all of it!

I went to high school in the late 1970s. As I touched upon elsewhere, my American hometown wasn’t a bad place to grow up. I was one of those boys who liked school, at least for the first several years. Then, as you can imagine, from puberty onwards I found myself among the uncool. (more…)

When I heard that Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty, 2013) was “Felliniesque,” that didn’t recommend it at all. By “Felliniesque,” I mean the most stunning and unconventional traits of such films as La Dolce Vita, 8½, and Juliet of the Spirits: basically, a person undergoing a personal crisis in an increasingly surreal, carnivalistic setting that suggests an oncoming psychotic break—or divine intervention—or both; a liberal use of the grotesque sweetened with a Christian-humanist compassion; (more…)

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny isn’t good enough or bad enough to merit a review. Which I guess is a review in and of itself.

I enjoyed the first three Indiana Jones films a good deal. They aren’t serious movies, but they are well-made, entertaining piffle, with Harrison Ford as an unusual hero who combines two-fisted paleo-masculinity with intellect and taste. But I don’t think I was ever young enough to take the character of Indiana Jones all that seriously. Thus I am pretty much immune to a big-budget nostalgia-fest about the character. If I were feeling nostalgic, I would simply watch the original films. Or better, just listen to John Williams’ wonderful music. (more…)

A little-known horror anthology series from the 1980s is now back on American television. Given how popular H. P. Lovecraft is in dissident Right circles, more of our people should know about this hidden gem. Inspired by the horror comics of the 1950s, it also owes much to the influence of writers such as Poe and Lovecraft.

Tales from the Darkside aired in syndication on late-night cable from 1984 until 1988 — meaning that you had to really search for the show, if it was even available in your area, and you had to stay up late to watch it (often after midnight). (more…)

Today is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of England’s greatest composers. Breaking with the German tradition, which nineteenth-century English composers sought to emulate, Vaughan Williams forged a distinctly English style that drew upon England’s musical heritage. He is also remembered as one of the twentieth century’s great symphonists.

I cannot speak for the rest of the world, but for those of us who grew up in the United States, especially in its more rural environs, autumn is a particularly nostalgic season. In part, this is owing to associations formed during childhood: the forest ramblings, the fallen leaves crunching underfoot, the morning fog over the trees, the smell of woodsmoke in the air; the pumpkin patches and hayrides, county fairs and bonfires — all of these thoughts and remembrances come back to us in this season, tinted in shades of red and gold.
