I very much enjoyed this discussion. While most books go onto the bottom of my growing to-read list after I buy them, Jim’s books of essays always go on the top.
Great discussion about a great book. I gave it and The Redneck Manifesto to my Dad for Christmas a few years back and he loved them.

Whether or not Western (White) civilization is objectively superior to other civilizations…who cares? The critical thing is the subjective belief among Westerners (especially their elites) that their civilization is worth fighting for. Otherwise, why not open the borders, decolonialize from Rhodesia to the Ivy League, accede to a multi-cultic one-world society?
Going back to the 19th and 20th centuries, there was a common belief among Americans that America was the best country in the world. Whether or not America was objectively the best country in the world, again…who cares? But this belief, given form in such ideologies as Manifest Destiny and the intense patriotism of the 20th century, provided that willingness to use power which conquered a continent, won global level wars and created a really marvelous standard of living.
Note that since the belief in American superiority has been largely eroded over the past several decades, the US has had a fairly dismal record when it comes to winning wars. Meanwhile, Homeland cities self-destruct in a morass of crime, infrastructure collapse and mass immigration.
Alas, too many Western advocates have been morally disarmed by accepting civilizational equivalence (the ideology of multi-culturalism). But the anti-Whites (colloquially known as the “Woke”) do believe that their proposed society (of “diversity,” “multi-racial democracy,” etc.) is superior and act accordingly. Thus, the ongoing tactics of open borders, CRT-DEI-ESG, iconoclasm, and “de-colonialization of the institutions” which: (a) tear down the foundations for Western self-defense, and (b) replace them with Woke supremacy.
But is the West objectively superior?
One can point out the difference between, say, the standard of living in South Africa under white rule as opposed to the black societies which preceded and now succeed it.
A symptom: the growing third worldization of Western countries is leading to a breakdown in complex systems. Third worlder students cannot deal with algebra or calculus? So “math is racist!” Third worlder youth cannot obey lawful orders of peace officers? “Defund the police!” Utilities, schools and emergency services do not function in a city run by third worlder politicos? “Systemic racism!”
What it comes down to is that the third worlders for whatever reasons (genetic, cultural) cannot (in the main) function in an advanced civilization. So they have to lower everything to the third world mean. Like it or not, Chicago’s South Side, Rotherham and the Paris banlieues are their desired futures.
In a backhanded sort of way, they are conceding that the West is objectively superior. The dilemma is in getting Westerners to understand this reality…and act accordingly.

My copy of “Redneck Manifesto” is one of the prized books in my library, and I very much look forward to reading “Whiteness: the Original Sin”.
