There are few displays of ethnomasochism and xenophilia more perverse than that of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – a day in January when white and black alike are meant to remember this hero of the Civil Rights era and to reflect on how far we have come as a country. MLK Day is an odd holiday to me, since it is as if the Byzantines had set aside a day to celebrate the heroism of Mehmed II, or some other Ottoman Sultan. Perhaps this analogy gives Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) far too much credit. (more…)

In recent decades, Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) has become a symbol of the possibility of racial egalitarianism and the supposed victory of progressivism throughout the Western world. His birthday, January 15, which is commemorated on the third Monday of each January, has been designated as a federal holiday by the United States government since 1986 (although it was not celebrated in all fifty states until 2000). Included among these documents were two FBI files which, curiously enough, have little to do with the Kennedy assassination but could have great bearing on the current struggles of the Dissident Right. On August 2, 1983, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill creating a legal public holiday in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although there had been little discussion of the bill in the House itself and little awareness among the American public that Congress was even considering such a bill, it was immediately clear that the U.S. Senate would take up the legislation soon after the Labor Day recess. The record shows quite clearly that Jewish organizations as well as a great number of individual Jews contributed enormously to the success of the movement to increase the power of blacks and alter the racial hierarchy of the United States.
