This past winter I lost my last grandparent — the most stubborn one, still to the end a strict English schoolteacher after having long since retired from the profession in the 1970s. She suffered through the desegregation years while working at Marshall High and was never dishonest about the experience. She possessed that combination of Southern decorum and irascible (and accurate) bluntness, which gave her the ability to reduce anyone, including 250-pound, six-foot-three black football players, to tears. As another birthday arrives, I find myself getting closer to the dreaded age of 40. Although I still feel young, I have started to reflect on the meaning of my life and my own mortality. Some people would call this a “midlife crisis.” Yet the real crisis comes from the disenfranchisement of white men in our culture and society. For every white man with a stable career and a family, an unemployed white man is living in his mom’s basement playing video games all day. Regardless of age, the wisdom of Hesiod reminds us that one man’s crisis can be another man’s opportunity. (more…)

I have both the pleasure of informing Counter-Currents readers of an upcoming novel authored by Mr. Spencer Quinn and of reviewing this latest addition to white nationalist-friendly fiction. When critiquing an author (especially for the first time), I like to get a sense of his Weltanschauung by reading and synthesizing some of his other works in conjunction with the monograph in question. As I have gotten older, certain events always seem to bring up specific memories and thoughts. This last week, I have struggled to fall asleep as I kept thinking about Homer’s Odyssey. The scene in question is when Odysseus returns home in disguise, only to see his once-esteemed dog Argos close to death after being neglected by his servants while Odysseus was away. Argos immediately recognized his owner when no one else did. (more…)
