Foul deeds will rise,
Though all the earth o’erwhelm them, to men’s eyes.
— William Shakespeare
I have written about the pervasive ideological subversion of American universities and the corruption and hypocrisy that is rampant in higher education in previous Counter-Currents posts. Universities are the fons et origo of the racial madness sweeping through our institutions.
A recent article in the Daily Mail caught my attention. It detailed the salaries of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) personnel at the University of Virginia (UVA). DEI staffers make up a bloated administrative corpus of approximately 230 individuals. Some are full time while others are high-level administrators, such as Associate Dean Martin Davidson. The “Global Chief Diversity Officer” title raises his annual compensation package to almost $600,000, a striking anomaly for which no plausible explanation can be given other than institutional bribery.
I challenge any inquisitive reader to peruse below the “professional” titles of these top ten wage-earners [sic] and not conclude that they are composed of vague and meaningless abstractions, the purpose being to connote high status and render the holders completely unaccountable for whatever it is that they pretend to do. What “global” entity, one might ask, is Martin Davidson “chief” of? What does the VP for “Community Partnerships” do that is different from what the “Chief Diversity and Community Engagement Officer” and the “Assistant Dean for Community Engagement and Equity” do? Why can’t the procurement and supplying of “Diversity Services,” whatever those might be, be carried out by the regular university procurement staff? What does the “Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion” do that the “Senior Assistant Dean, DEI” doesn’t do? Finally, for those whose who have not reached the limits of bewilderment or disgust upon contemplating such malfeasance: What does the Global Chief Diversity Officer do that is left undone by all of his flunky underlings?
There are two relevant observations missing from this article’s valiant muckraking efforts, however, that make what it is about scandalous and damning on a much greater order of magnitude.
The first is that the “diversity” payola boondoggle featured here is standard fare at most every American university and college. The more prestigious the institution, the more egregious and outrageous the scam. All of the flagship state universities — The Ohio State University, University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin, etc. — do what UVA does. Some even do it “better.”
Mark J. Perry, Professor Emeritus at The University of Michigan, recently released his University of Michigan 2023-2024 Diversity Report Summary. Here is an excerpt from the Executive Summary that makes the DEI grifters at UVA look like rank amateurs:
UM employs at least 241 paid staff members whose main duties are to provide DEI programming and services as either their exclusive or primary job responsibility. In addition, 76 faculty or staff members work part-time as “DEI Unit Leads” advancing diversity efforts in one of UM’s 51 schools, colleges, and units that are a key part of . . . [a] new 5-year diversity plan called The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) 2.0 Plan. We did not include the salaries of the part-time “DEI Unit Leads” to calculate the annual cost of DEI at UM, but did include them in the list of DEI-related staff members . . . which brings the total DEI headcount to 317 employees . . . [W]e believe that the actual number of DEI staff . . . is actually significantly higher than 317, and likely exceeds 500 employees.
The total annual payroll of UM’s full-time DEI staff is estimated to be $30.68 million — $23.24 million for staff salaries and $7.44 million for employee fringe benefits. To put that in perspective, $30.68 million would pay in-state tuition and fees ($17,228) for 1,781 undergraduate students . . . DEI staff is well compensated with salaries as high as $402,800 for . . . head diversity administrator Tabbye Chavous Sellers . . . Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion & Chief Diversity Officer.
Chavous Sellers succeeded her husband, Robert M. Sellers, in this prestigious position, just coincidentally. Sellers is an educational psychology professor whose “expertise,” you would be shocked to learn, is in “racial and ethnic identity, personality and health.” When Sellers’ ample keister recently warmed that VP chair, he, too, was making around a half-million bucks a year. You can be certain that the process by which Frau Sellers replaced Herr Sellers was a model of Wolverine transparency.
The DEI Strategic Plan Team at the Ann Arbor campus is a dusky troika composed of a “Program Manager” – aka secretary ($70,000) — a “Senior Program Manager” ($83,146), and a “Strategic Communications Manager” ($94,500). “Associate VPs,” “assistant VPs,” and “directors” abound. The well-worn, bureaucratically opaque lingo that describes what any of the DEI staff actually do reads like a mind-numbing collection of tautologies and dead ends, one and all. Consider, for example, Assistant Vice Provost for Equity, Inclusion and Academic Affairs Deborah S. Willis, who scrapes by on $161,762.00 a year.
“[S]he works [sic] with the leadership team to develop strategy and tactics that lead to institutional transformation around diversity, equity, inclusion . . .” So, Diversity-Deborah’s job is to transform the place around — what is it? Ah, I almost forgot: “diversity.” “Transformation” is one of those virtue-signaling buzzwords used to cast a priestly cloak of sanctimony over the mau-mauing that diversity commissars use to intimidate would be micro-aggressors and demand more resources from cowering administers.
Looking on the website at these diversity desk jockeys and their bogus titles, what the feeding trough known as the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion is all about can be expressed with that illuminating mother of all “diversity” tautologies: “Diversity is wonderful because it’s so wonderful to be diverse.”
The second observation is that DEI personnel and the university administrators who insert them into highly-remunerated positions of power are complicit in activities that resemble those of organized crime. I am speaking here of extortion in the form of a protection racket. This is the point where cynicism trumps ideology. The administrators and the diversity chiefs they hire know that “diversity” as a profession is a hustle with all the incentives aimed at making “diversity” impossible to achieve without ever-more resources that are never enough. With the tens of millions poured into diversity staff and initiatives over the years everywhere, is there anywhere where an acceptable level of diversity has been achieved — where “racism” and “white privilege” have not gotten worse? “Diversity” workers need “racists” to justify their paychecks, which is why “racism” is the “gift that keeps on giving.” “True diversity,” like the Second Coming, is always far in the future.
The racketeering modus operandi works something like this. A university president hires a “Diversity VP” with a huge salary and perks for “protection” purposes, similar to a business owner paying regular installments to the local mafia in exchange for them not burning down his store. The VP then is green-lighted to build a pyramid of “diversity” personnel with him perched at the top and given carte blanche to meddle wherever he chooses. The pyramid functions public relations-wise as evidence that the administration really cares about “diversity” and believes that “racism” must never be permitted to rear its ugly head on campus . . . for long. The bigger the pyramid, the more the meddling and the more it shows how deeply the bosses care and that outing “racists” is the highest priority. In exchange for the fat salary, the perks, and the bossing-around carte blanche, the Diversity Chief “protects” his employer by orchestrating a perpetual reign of terror that he keeps on a slow boil. It enforces the DEI orthodoxy, punishes and/or expels heretics, keeps the slush funds coming, and holds the frothing-at-the-mouth, affirmative action faculty and students at bay.
Stripping away the vacuous “diversity talk,” the religious piety surrounding the quest for “equality,” and the pretend anguish of oppression and exploitation, what remains is an old-fashioned shakedown. The $30 million a year that The University of Michigan pays to keep hundreds of people in fake jobs is a spectacular example of the kind of racial racketeering that goes on unobstructed at universities across the land. It uses the threat of “racism” to extort institutional power and control from the bosses, along with high salaries. No one at these institutions benefits from these payoffs other than the “morality enforcers” and their wards. For the administrators, it’s the cost of doing business subtracted from the bottom line: payoffs to keep the in-house goons from disrupting their operations.
A personal, relevant anecdote. Years ago, while employed at a second-tier state university, I sat in a university-wide presentation and Q&A session for a finalist for the position of Vice President for Diversity and Equity. Near the end, I raised my hand and asked her: “If you were appointed to this position, after occupying it for five years, how would you know if you were successful?” She paused and looked extremely uncomfortable. It seemed like a reasonable question to me. Her answer was so pathetically incoherent, I am unable to reproduce it. As I recall, she was a white woman. A black guy got the job.
While I don’t have the data to prove it, I strongly suspect that the average length of stay in a Chief Diversity job at a university is pretty short, with the time mostly spent polishing the resume for the next move . . . up.
For anyone paying attention to the “transformation” of American universities “around diversity, equity, inclusion,” the people running them are looking increasingly like corporate criminals.

Just after Jim Goad puts a smile on my face with his news about Haiti, you come along and spoil it with this smack in the face.
As I recall, she was a white woman.
Probably a “fellow White woman.” If indeed these jobs are what the author claims they are (some sort of protection money), I can’t see giving any such jobs to the hated Karens going over very well. Indeed, it seems that would defeat the whole purpose, wouldn’t it?
A While back, Jared Taylor was talking about the “five ladies” on the Supreme Court. There are only four “ladies” on the SCOTUS, if someone would let him know. We have:
1 Jewess
1 Wise Latina
1 Sista
1 Karen
If I’m not mistaken, that would make White women the single most underrepresented demographic group on the Court. White men are overrepresented on the Court, with four current members. That got me to thinking about how much “diversity” comes at the expense of plain old White women. (I don’t believe all that crap about White women being the main beneficiaries of affirmative action.) I mean, if you’re under pressure to promote diversity, why not pick a twofer? I would be curious to see how many women CEOs, judges, agency heads, etc. are White. I suspect we would be radically underrepresented there, too.
I think it’s possible that at one time white women were the primary beneficiaries of AA, but yeah, as you say, why put someone who is oppressed on one level, when you can have the doubly or even triply (if that’s a word) oppressed? Perhaps white women get ahead with AA because they are the most competent “minority.”
Additionally, the whole Karen meme is a blessing in disguise. It shows white women that they can never truly be a minority, and that actual minorities hate them. It also provides us the opportunity to welcome them into our arms.
I love Karens! They are simply white women with standards.
As for JT’s “five ladies,” I believe this is his way of mocking Roberts for being weak.
The transfer of this enormous amount of money from White taxpayers to black grifters is ridiculous. We’re paying for these field hands to lay around in luxury. And it keeps getting worse
American universities have transitioned into anti-universities. All DEI personnel are social parasites, doing nothing good and much harm. Their bloated salaries are a total waste. No normal country would tolerate such an egregious scam.
Imagine taking out a student loan to pay for this DEI bureaucracy. It’s a sucker bet.
Life is an IQ test. If you attend university today, then you’ve failed the test.
Unfortunately their tentacles have stretched into every corporation. It’s hard to escape from, and being on the inside watching them enact blatantly illegal programs in hiring and promotion, knowing that the courts never punish racial discrimination against whites no matter what the law says, is depressing.
I hardly can wait for the day when these jive-ass diversity commissars with ropy hair get kicked off of the gravy train and then find that nobody will hire them even as an assistant manager of a fast food joint. This goes double for the vastly overpaid leftist administrators who brought those parasites on board. “This report shows that you wasted $30 million of the university’s funds annually on ‘diversity’. What do you have to say for yourself?”
At BYU they use the term “belonging,” as in “Committee on Race, Equity and Belonging.” It’s nauseating. They dress up all the DEI stuff with gospelly sounding BS and quotes from various church leaders. This is where tithing money is going. One of the oh-so-holy church “apostles” said, “…unity and diversity are not opposites. We can achieve greater unity as we foster an atmosphere of inclusion and respect for diversity.” It’s the familiar mandated script full of propaganda slogan cliches. This man is supposed to be a “prophet, seer and revelator,” but he’s just a BS artist and, like the rest of the “prophets” in the quorum of the 12, signals his obedience to the rainbow regime powers-that-be whenever he can. The days of the church being defenders of conservative values and discouraging miscegenation are long gone; these days they want to be the bestest bestest diversity respecters and will do so “in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.” BYU is crawling with “DEI”-promoting faculty and staff these days, even if they are trickier than those at other schools in how they go about promoting it. They avoid using the term “DEI” because they know many members are against DEI, but they also know that members will have a hard time complaining about these diversity initiatives because to do so might be seen as criticizing church leaders, which is a big no-no and could lead to the loss of one’s temple recommend. Expect BYU to be the wokest university in the country in 15 years. If there’s one thing they can do better than anyone, it’s brown nose, and they know who butters their bread now!
“The days of the church being defenders of conservative values and discouraging miscegenation are long gone…”
Amen, The Catholic universities, Jesuit included, are doing the DEI chicken dance as well.
Wow. That is not good news.
I was wondering if or how BYU was doing “modern practical Marxism” like all the other Universities. My niece is a BYU student and when I was in Idaho and Salt Lake City over the holidays last year, I was hoping to get some firsthand opinions on that. But Zoomers are on such a different wavelength that I wasn’t even sure how to cautiously broach the topic at all.
Most of the Conservatives that I know despise Mitt Romney and wonder why he isn’t a Democrat. However, it seems to me that the more affluent the LDS are today ─ or at least around SLC ─ the more Liberal they tend to be. I spent a lot of time observing and crashing various local podcasts where Mormons are debating all of these issues with other armchair intellectuals. It seems to me that the younger people and the more affluent tend to be Libtards waiting to come out.
My conclusion is that it is not IF the Church fully embraces race-mixing and sodomy but WHEN. So in a lot of the podcast debates, they were thinking that it would only be about fifteen years before you would see your first Black Lesbian Bishops. I was thinking that it would be closer to fifty more years. My octogenarian Dad, who has been an LDS member in good standing all his life, thinks never ─ but then I guess you would think that if you also believe that the Church really is run by divine revelation. After all, why would the Truth ever change?
Anyway, awhile back a local University in Arizona had some brouhaha when a biological male professor wearing a dress tripped over his high-heels to avoid some kind of aggressive podcast “reporter” and face-planted. There was predicatable outrage from the University leadership, of course. From the grainy campus surveillance video it looked like the faculty member with “nontraditional pronouns” tried to take a swing at the podcaster so I doubt if there will be any legal repercussions and I have not followed it.
In any case, I don’t think any of the male professors are wearing dresses and spiked-heels at BYU just yet. I’d like to know.
Over forty years ago, when I went to BYU-Idaho (they did not call it that then) they had a pretty strict Honor Code. Men had to have fairly short hair, trimmed moustaches, no beards. I wound up in the office of the Dean for Student Life many times just for having popped into the Testing Center with a five-o’clock shadow. Male students could wear blue jeans to class but the girls could not. The girls could not have Butch hairstyles and had to either wear dress slacks or an actual dress to class. The dresses had to cover almost to the knee. This was in addition to the other standard LDS rules for every member ─ no tobacco, alcohol, coffee, black tea, or premarital sex.
I’m pretty sure the last item was not enforced at all when it came to the exchange student Negro ballplayers at BYU-Idaho. This is pretty typical everywhere. A tenured History professor that I took at Idaho State University once flunked a Negro ballplayer that did not attend class and did zero work, and the educator himself got fired. It took years to get his job back, and only because most of his colleagues vouched for him.
I don’t know what the answer is exactly. Unless you aspire to be a welder proficient in trailer hitches and sprocket wheels, I don’t see the practicality of young people boycotting college.
Sure, it might sound “based,” but because a Bachelor’s degree today is what a High School Diploma or GED was when my Dad was a kid, I don’t see how you can forego that little rite-of-passage exactly. How many jobs can you get milking cows that puts breakfast on the table?
My Mom was the stay-at-home type and I don’t think she ever had a paying job after college and saying “I do” to the Mrs. Degree. Being college-educated, I remember that she knew the answers to a lot of questions in my youth, even helping me with stuff like Algebra when my Dad was at work. Mormons believe in women being educated. A college degree, if you graduate, is always a net plus unless you borrow from Shylock to pay for it.
Guaranteed Student Loans guarantee the bank’s profits but do not protect you at all. They should be eliminated entirely, and that *might* help ease the tuition inflation problem. (Padding the faculty, staff, and administration with useless Leftists and Diversity-hires and non-binary White cat-ladies is also a massive problem, but that has already been mentioned.)
Unless you are a heart surgeon and somehow kept the student loans to a minimum, you are going to have a very hard time paying those “guaranteed” loans back, and when you do, you will be appalled about how much really was just interest on the debt.
And even once you are done paying back every cent, you will not have a house or something of value that you can sell off or to show for it other than a degree in French Romantic Literature or whatever.
I studied a lot of STEM and most of that is unremunerative as well. Nearly all of the STEM jobs depend in one way or another upon the vagaries of government contracts.
🙂
I am glad that BYU came up in these DEI discussions. BYU’s office on diversity, equity, and belonging put out a long-awaited report from a panel of ethnics (no whites) including the head of this department, a Mexican lawyer who teaches in BYU law school. Here’s the link to the report:
https://race.byu.edu/00000177-d543-dfa9-a7ff-d5cfc1dc0000/race-equity-belonging-report-feb-25-2021
I’ve read most of it and it is flat-out disgusting. The drivel these reparation people want is bad enough but they also “suggest” that BYU change the names of several of their campus buildings. The narcissism of the POCs never ceases to amaze.
What is also very disappointing, and several of you have commented on the fact that our once rock-solid institutions have caved to the fetishization of blacks. Mormons always preached that mixing with blacks was not good. Brigham Young said that to mix with a black was death.
Spencer W. Kimball, 12th Prophet of the Mormon Church, in a 1976 speech said:
“…we recommend that people marry those that are of the same racial background generally, and of somewhat the same economic and social and educational background.”
Boyd K. Packer, one of the 12 Apostles of the Church, in a 1977 speech to the students of BYU-Hawaii said:
“… We’ve always counseled in the church that our Mexican members to marry Mexicans, our Japanese members to marry Japanese, our Caucasians to marry Caucasians, our Polynesian members to marry Polynesians. This counsel has been wise.”
Russell M. Nelson, the current Prophet of the Church spoke at a Church-wide conference in 1995 with the following words. This same talk has been published in Church media as recently as 2017:
“The commandment to love our neighbors without discrimination is certain. But it must not be misunderstood. It applies generally. Selection of a marriage partner, on the other hand, involves specific and not general criteria. After all, one person can be married only to one individual. The probabilities of a successful marriage are known to be much greater if both the husband and wife are united in their religion, language, culture, and ethnic background. Thus, in choosing an eternal companion, wisdom is needed. It’s better not to fly in the face of constant head winds. Occasional squalls provide challenge enough. Once marriage vows are taken, absolute fidelity is essential-to the Lord and to one’s companion.”
There are other quotes. Of course, Wikipedia even has a section on it:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interracial_marriage_and_the_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints
What I don’t get is that the Mormons, despite many of their top people advising to marry within one’s race, have recently said this:
“In 2013, the LDS Church published an essay entitled “Race and the Priesthood” on its official website. The essay disavowed teachings in the past that interracial marriage was a sin, indicating that it was influenced by the racism of the era.”
I thought that the words of the Prophets was final due to the inspired nature. How can the Mormons say for Caucasians to marry Caucasians in 1977 and now say that these were words of racism? You’d never catch a muslim saying Mohammed’s words were wrong, then, now, and 1,000 years from now.
The Mormon church has a Sunday program called Music and the Spoken Word. For the Easter Sunday 2023 episode, they featured a young Mormon couple, a redheaded woman, and avery black man. They had recently lost a baby and we had to endure their grief that their perfect mixed child was gone.
In 2019, the Church announced donating two million dollars that the Mormons gave to the International African American Museum in Charleston, SC. In 2021 the Church announced a one million dollar scholarship donation per year for three years, overseen by the United Negro College Fund, which will help young black students in the United States. Perhaps these 5 million dollars will be enough penance for the Mormon Church to pay on top of denouncing the words of their once beloved Prophets. I highly doubt it will be enough. Once blood is smelled, more racial sharks will circle. The Mormon savings account called Ensign Peak, is now at 100 billion dollars, I kid you not. If they are folding like a cheap suit now, they’ll probably agree to dole out the 100 billion as reparations.
Russell M. Nelson, in donating the millions of dollars to NAACP and other black causes, has become friends with and appeared on podium with Amos Brown, excuse me, The Reverend Doctor Amos Brown. Brown currently is on the San Francisco Board of Reparations. This board has a report that has the most ludicrous reparations demands. And it’s 400 pages. I’ve read/skimmed most of it and it is jaw dropping. Amos Brown, friend of the head of the Mormons, Russell M. Nelson, says, for starters, that every black in San Francisco should get a one-time payment of five million dollars. Will Russell M. Nelson gladly continue to open Mormon church’s pocketbook and help pay for these reparations? Why not? That 100 billion dollars surely will give Mormons immunity from black wrath.
I work in an industry that historically has NOT been associated with “liberalism”. I don’t want to stretch it and say that it’s a “right wing industry”, because there’s no such thing in the West. There are only “leftist approved” industries and “leftist maligned” industries, and the leftist maligned industries, at least at one time, used to have enough backbone to do their business without groveling to their masters.
This is not true anymore. The complex that I work in sends out “Pride” emails on a weekly basis now. Webinars are scheduled several times a month for DEI initiatives. The company logo is proudly displayed in rainbow colors for the annual rituals. During “Black History Month”, there are employee spotlight emails sent out to recognize (usually black women) all kinds of useless people in various positions throughout the company who do nothing more than sit in meetings and answer emails all day.
Even in my role, way down at the bottom of the pile, I have to sit in meetings 3-4 times a week in a room that is over represented with black women. All of whom have higher paying salaries than mine, despite my role being where the rubber meets the road and me being one of the only people they can’t do without.
All of this DEI stuff has become a license to operate, and just as this article points out, the people who force their way into these positions are nothing less than racketeers and extortionists.
100 %, none of this would have transpired the way it has over the last 2 decades if it wasn’t for social media. It is the existence of these public forums such as Twitter, where corporate reputations and executive jobs can be butchered with nothing more than a accusatory tweet, that is to blame for this phenomenon. Even in academia, I don’t think this inexcusable crap would have risen to this magnitude if it was not for the paranoid fear that administrators live with on a daily basis that a POC student/gay student or faculty member will go viral with some kind of smear campaign that ruins their careers.
Academia is essentially a cartel and pyramid scheme. There are even articles like this comparing academia to a drug gang https://alexandreafonso.me/2013/11/21/how-academia-resembles-a-drug-gang/. The undergraduates with their tuition are essentially paying for the pensions of the retirees and stipends for the graduate students. The graduate students are like paid low-level drug runners. Both are taking the highest risk but are also seeking the highest reward. That being of course on the inside. All the big shots in the university like the big shots in a drug gang for the most part don’t do any actual field work. They are in meetings all day and trying to make deals; namely get their hands on hot stinky grant money. It’s basically a high brow pissing contest. Look at all these BS DEI positions. Each one gets more absurd than the next. “Assistant to the deputy associate dean of diversity.” What do these people even do all day? At least in STEM people are actually doing something and trying to contribute to society. But all this DEI stuff is basically more or less what Paul Gottfried wrote about in “Multiculturalism and the Politics of Guilt.” Leftist politics has essentially become a religion. They are already going after that, I forget her name, law professor in Pennsylvania for making pro-white remarks.
There is starting to be some push back against this, although it’s on a low level. The head of diversity at Columbia University just got exposed for plagarisim. One of the things that might be useful is exposing the plagarisim in academia. It appears to be fairly common, this includes thesis, dissertations, and any published work. Some news outlet needs to do an expose on this racket, one that could withstand the backlash, some network like Fox news. Universities and colleges are starting to see somewhat of a reaction to the fact that it’s a partial scam. Some universities are scaling back various humanities programs because of a lack of interest. The public is finally starting to see that a lot of non STEM degrees are worthless. We need to communicate to future students to not go into debt with student loans and fund this scheme. If Jewish billionaires can cut off funding for the ivy leagues, then a lot of alumni can stop donating money to their alma maters for the same reason. Whites are abandoning the military for ideological reasons, we could do something similar to higher education.
