Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory.
If it is plausible and helps explains something a person knows to be true but cannot prove, then it provides comfort. It makes the truth seem less daunting. It also helps if the theory is entertaining. Sometimes conspiracy theories are correct, sometimes only partially so, and sometimes — maybe most of the time — not at all. The centuries-old conspiracy theory positing that the Jews are behind the destruction of Christian Europe is a combination of all three as packaged in an essential little volume entitled The Nameless War by Archibald Ramsay.
