Given their bellicose nature and what is at stake, you would think that Donald Trump, Pete Hegseth, and the Pentagon busybodies would heed Machiavelli’s advice that “A prince should have no other aim or thought, nor select anything else for his study, than war and its rules and discipline.” But the 2026 Iran War shows that they are complete amateurs in the art of war. I do feel there has been a kind of concentration of pop culture in recent years: everything blurs together now. I don’t know if video game makers were original in the past but, I believe, the fact that a given game was an artisanal to semi-pro effort, more or less isolated, meant that titles often had a rather distinctive character (e.g. Civilization II, Starcraft). Now it’s all a bit of a mush.Case in point: the new film Warcraft: The Beginning, the first based on the venerable RTS/MMORPG series by Blizzard. (more…)

After seeing the Warcraft film trailer back in November of 2015, I wrote an article about the World of Warcraft video game universe wherein I discussed the lore surrounding the Orcs. I also made predictions about what messages the directors of the upcoming film would try to promote. Most importantly, I told my readers that I would write a follow-up review of the film.

Last Friday at the convention known across gaming fandom as Blizzcon, the full trailer was released for the upcoming film Warcraft, which will be based of course on the Warcraft and World of Warcraft video game series. As an ardent fan of the games, I was filled with enthusiasm and impatience upon watching it. I rarely go to the movies anymore, but for a film that cinematizes one of my favorite games, I would surely be there on opening day. It will be out in June and will star Travis Fimmel, who plays Ragnar Lothbrok in the Vikings TV series. (more…)
