Herman’s real point is that women should not be forced to work by social or financial pressures, but should instead receive, for example, a housewife’s salary or higher childcare allowances. This plea for more freedom of choice has been interpreted in the media more and more obsessively in the direction of a lack of freedom. While it was initially claimed that Herman wanted to go back to the 1950s and “force women to stay at home,” it was not very long before Nazi Germany was reached as a huge projection screen for all German fears.
