Jak zastánci, tak odpůrci homosexuálních sňatků sdílí společný mylný předpoklad: že legalizace homosexuálních sňatků zničí “heteronormativitu”
(termín vyjadřující názor, že jen heterosexualita je normální sexuální orientace a že každé pohlaví má v životě své přirozené role). Avšak myšlenka, že změna sňatkového práva může změnit heteronomativitu je jednoduše mylná.
