The Roots of German Self-Immolation

F. Roger Devlin
Image 1

Why go to Calcutta, when you can bring Calcutta home?

1,031 words

Great historical changes are often sparked by trivial events, but have deeper causes going back for generations or even centuries. The immediate trigger of the horrifying events currently unfolding in Germany is said to have been a “tweet” casually sent out August 25 by the Office for Refugees and Migrants of the German city of Nuremberg. The “tweet” merely stated that Germany was no longer applying the accepted EU rule that applications for asylum must be made from the first EU country a person enters. Within hours, a large part of Western Asia had been apprized of the change, and an army of fraudulent “Syrian refugees” was on its way to Germany from every country between Gambia and Afghanistan.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, who once curried favor with the gullible by declaring that “multiculturalism has utterly failed,” now says there will be no limit to the number of migrants Germany will accept, pathetically requesting that not more than 800,000 show up the first year. The German newsweekly Der Spiegel recently depicted her as the second coming of Mother Teresa.

The public, as so often in our days, is confused by the contradiction between what it hears and what it sees: told of desperate refugees fleeing violent death, they see crowds of smiling, healthy young men waving the V-for-Victory sign or chatting on cell phones. As the Pope commands them to receive the swarthy hordes with Christian charity, a prominent Imam is filmed proclaiming: “We will trample [the Europeans] underfoot, Allah willing.” Solicited for donations to alleviate suffering, they behold migrants throwing donated supplies from railway platforms the instant they are offered.

Only Seeking Peace

Only Seeking Peace

Of course, there is always a humanitarian crisis, as the term is presently understood, going on somewhere. Decades of peace and prosperity have caused flaccid Westerners to view eternal aspects of the human condition such as war and poverty as “emergencies” to which all else must be sacrificed. And Germany is an especially easy target for the sort of emotional and moral blackmail. All of us in the West are supposed to be responsible for the ills of the rest of the world, but only Germans have had their identity entirely constructed on guilt for seventy years. The “denazification” process in post-war Germany was in many ways the original form of political correctness, later adapted for use in America and elsewhere. In some ways, it has never ended: a large proportion of German news reports contain breathless segments on the danger of “right wing extremism,” which is always said to be growing. Posters and advertisements remind Germans that they must accept foreign immigrants because “everyone is a foreigner almost everywhere,” or pictures of smiling Asians proclaiming their alleged “love” for their German neighbors and implying that said neighbors are finks if they do not return the sentiment.

The litter left behind by allegedly poor refugees

The litter left behind by allegedly poor refugees

But perhaps the most typically German way of inculcating guilt is the Mahnmal. Dictionaries translate this word as “memorial,” but that does not capture the peculiar tone of moral condescension conveyed by the original. Mahnen, in German, is to admonish, as one admonishes a naughty child; the word also suggests ermahnen, to exhort. A Mahnmal is a memorial that speaks down to you, telling you what to think and feel, and above all suggesting that without the help of the good people who erected it, you could not be trusted to act decently, or even to keep from turning Nazi.

Thousands of such Mahnmäler are strewn at regular intervals across the German urban landscape. Pictured below is one of my favorites, located across from a luxury department store in Berlin:

Many Mahnmäler are deliberately ugly, as if to constitute in themselves a kind of punishment for the beholder:

But is the German guilt complex only a post-war phenomenon, a mere internalization of their conquerors’ view of them? I do not think so; if it were, it would never have been able to sustain itself for seventy years, with no sign of flagging even now.

One clue to the deeper sources of German masochism is the success of Martin Luther in the 16th century. Luther and his fellow reformers developed to an extreme degree a tendency always present within Christianity—the doctrine of grace. This doctrine, with its roots running down through Augustine to Paul, emphasizes the unavoidably sinful nature of man and his utter inability to overcome his corrupt nature in the absence of divine grace. Luther tells his congregants, in effect, “you are nothing but miserable worms, entitled to no better than hellfire and eternal damnation—not so much for what you have done, although you have never done anything good, but because of what you are: an heir to the original sin of Adam. God, for inscrutable reasons of his own, is going to suspend this most just fate for a few of you through an unbought act of his grace. But never forget that you don’t really deserve this.”

Image 7

Sinner in the Hands of an Angry God

It takes a special kind of person to respond positively to such a teaching. The man on the street is and shall always remain a Pelagian: he thinks heaven is for good people and hell for bad. But through the ages there have been recurrent episodes of enthusiasm for the doctrine of grace. And to judge by the success of Luther four hundred years ago, an unusually large proportion of those susceptible to such enthusiasm appear to be concentrated in Germany.

The difference between today’s German guilt complex and Lutheranism is that in the new version there is no salvation: the German is just supposed to keep repenting and keep being told to go to hell.

Like so many European vices, moral self-flagellation is an unhealthy excess of a virtue: the capacity for self-criticism, the refusal to remain satisfies with what one is. European man could not have achieved great things in the absence of such a tendency to fight against his amour-propre. Today, European self-criticism is increasingly looking like a suicidal impulse. It is somehow fitting that the crisis is unfolding in Germany.

From what I know about Christians and guilt, someone is raking in the money. After all Mother Teresa brought a lot of revenue to the Catholic church while telling the dying how much God liked suffering. You can buy an indulgence or you can cut off your thinking abilities by believing in something called Grace, you miserable cur you. God will not love you unless you give up everything. Some how those who preach this are not included with the damned. Interesting that.

Holy hell, I’ve been to the “Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe” and thought that was bad.

But to have random signs around Germany saying “Places of Horror which we should never forget – Auschwitz, Maidenek, Treblinka, etc.” seems particularly strange and cruel.

I like the article, it punches a lot of the fatalistic buttons that routinely need punching. But the thing that bugs me is that Germany is a political entity that didn’t really exist until the late 1800’s. So what is it about the people that make up what we call “Germany” that made them such a target? Why did Charlemagne and Attila before him go after them so ruthlessly? Did they fear them? The scientific and philosophical world was dominated by Germans in the late 19th century. Is there a link between this fact and a need for WWI and II? Who fears them so much? And why have the German people forgotten who they are, I asked rhetorically?

After the Greeks in Antiquity, the Italians during the Renaissance, the Germans are the most creative people of Europe in modern times. That upsets a lot of jealous people.

BTW, neither Charlemagne nor Attila should be counted among the “anti-Germans”. Charlemagne was a German himself, being of Frankish descent. He saw in Christianity a civilizing power which he used all over his empire. Attila was an invading Hun in search of booty. He conquered a short lived kingdom north of the Roman Empire which included Germany and Eastern Europe. Of course “Germany” as an unified country did not exist at that time. Only a collection of Germanic tribes.

Its a bit off topic Kelly ( or at the very least not exactly C-Cs cup of tea) but Pastor Campbell of Northern Ireland and W. H. Bennett of Toronto were both British-Israel (Christian Identity to you) adherents who both independently, it seems, came to the conclusion that they were overly influenced by the war propaganda and that Germany might be Israel and not Assyria, as it had a number of the marks.

I as a German have often asked the question: “What do they want from us?”
I really don’t know, but it is a fact that Germany’s frontiers have been pushed back since the early Middle Ages and German living space has continuously been diminished.
Nancy, Lyons, Milan, Besancon, Verdun, were once German cities, and recently Prague, Straßburg, Königsberg, Danzig, Eupen, Breslau, Stettin and many other places were German, they have been taken, too.
What do they want from us Germans?

      1. Jaego says:
        October 7, 2015 at 11:34 pm

Easy – they want you to die. Now you have to decide whether to comply or fight for your existence.

        1. Walter says:
          October 8, 2015 at 11:38 am

True: They want us to die and unfortunately the numbers of Germans not wanting to be done away with without fight is quite small. This is a unique case of sustained, slow suicide. The spirit of the images in the above article are a strong motive force towards that and any solution will have to result in the total destruction of these craven idols of moral hatred.

Even if the solution is to fight, I would like to understand what it is that feeds that destructive force against Germany.

        Hello Walter,

IMHO the attitudes of our neighbours can be well explained by rational factors (competition for territory, resources and power) as well as emotional factors (fear of being overrun or taken over, a bit of jealousy as well: first our armies prove much more powerful than theirs, then even after the lost war Germany emerges again within a couple of years as the most wealthy and powerful country in Europe, at least in economical terms).

What continues to bother me is the sheer hatred towards our country that was developed by the American elites (not the ordinary American people), and that IMHO dwarfs that of other countries (like Russia) where it would be much more justified.

        1. Walter says:
          October 8, 2015 at 11:32 am

There must be other than economic reasons for this irrational behavior against Germany. France, Spain, England were all more powerful than Germany, yet a coalition against them was only put in practice in the case of the France of Napoleon and after his defeat, France was treated in an exemplary intelligent manner. France was not humiliated, hacked up, no lasting campaign of deadly hatred was started against it, maintained and intensified over the years.
I rather think that reasons such as competition for resources (Germany has practically n o resources and the little there were have been largely taken: potassium in the Elsaß, coal in Upper Silesia, Uranium and silver in the Erzgebirge) cannot serve to understand the European attitude against Germany. When Germany had no power, this was an invitation for encroachments on German integrity, when it was strong enough to defend itself, coalitions were made, in secret and openly, to crush it. Even in the early 19th century the Poles wanted their future western border reaching far into German territory, about where it is now, etc. The Polish literature of the 19th century is full of hateful sentiments against Germans, but as far as I know not Russians, even as they instituted the two Polish divisions in the late 18th century and benefitted most territorially.
Perhaps it was rational for Russia to extend its power to the west in order to round off its possessions in Eastern Europe and to possess the Dardanelles, but was it rational for England to fume against the small wars of Prussia to push aside Austria, as in Schleswig in 1864, for example?
What the US want in Germany is also not clear to me; even in 1932 Roosevelt said that he wanted to crush Germany. And he even grew rich as a banker from German misery in the 1920s.
Certainly, Germany is in an unenviable geographical position with more neighbors than any other country which can make coalitions with other opponents of Germany to press upon the borders west and east. Perhaps it is just the bad luck of the position in the middle, but we have no possible normal conflict of interests with the US, or the 50 more countries the US dragged into the 2. War by making them declare war upon us.
There is an irrational streak underneath this extreme enmity against Germany, I have no other explanation.
The present development of European ethnic dissolution by accepted decree is the mirror image of this irrationality, as insanity induces insanity, why else would the once-vigorous European peoples not hang the politicians and press manipulators who are responsible for the present occurrences?

          1. Richard Edmonds says:
            October 16, 2015 at 5:40 am

Walter writes: “There is an irrational streak underneath this extreme enmity against Germany, I have no other explanation.”

Walter as an informed German must know that the source of this irrational streak of extreme enmity against Germany is the propaganda-claim by the Allies of the Second World War to have fought the Good War (as per the title of the book of the American writer, Studs Turkel). And the roots of present-day Germany’s Self-Immolation (Chancellor Merkel wellcoming millions of aliens into her country) is the pitiable acceptance by the mass of Germans of their former enemies’ blood-libel that the Germans are a uniquely accursed people, as per the Allies’ unfounded and insane “Holocaust”- allegation.

The remedy is for Walter and others to expose the truth of these matters. Vigorous European peoples would do no other.

Considering that the Germans are inaugurating a genocide of the whole European ethny that will be worse by orders of magnitude than the one that they get so worked up about from seventy years ago, you would think that their guilt complex or some sense of shame would stay their hand.

The death toll from the Second World War can be repaired by new European births, just as the 30 million from the Thirty Years war did not dent Germans demographics 200 years later. But this race mixing will never be repaired.

Who gets to define what the proper expiation for German sins is? And why does the expiation for German sins give them the right to commit genocide all over again?

  6. Patrick Le Brun says:

I have only briefly visited Germany and have very little first hand knowledge of German society and law. Obviously “Holocaust Denial” is policed very closely , but what if you were to laugh uproariously by these statues or even have a laugh-in with numerous activists during the times that the sidewalks are busiest? What if you were to sing Shoananas and wave pineapples? What if college kids posted pictures in sexual positions with these statues in a trend similar to “planking” from a few years ago. (nearly 3 million people watched just this one compilation of planking photos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rObgXiQEV8g )

Someone told me a Thomas Jefferson quote today: “Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible positions.” Perpetual German guilt and slow, contrite suicide of their entire nation for their sins of 70+ years ago is an unintelligible position, but one which they are still officially going along with…for now.

If you where a tourist you would probably get away with a fine.

      Hello Patrick Le Brun,

greetings from the North-West of Germany.

The German penal law rules tht it is not only a punishable crime to “deny the Holocaust”, but also to “violate the diginity of the victims of National Socialist terror rule and the Holocaust”.

What exactly constitutes such a “violation of diginity” is left open, meaning anyone in the jurisdictional apparatus is free to interpret any action as such.
And certainly the system’s level of tolerance in such matters is rather low. In addition, an inofficial control apparatus has been established, using pressure groups.

And as this is my first commentary on CC, though being a regular reader for years, let me thank Dr. Johnson for creating such a fine web site and Dr. Devlin as well as Mr. Le Brun and the other authors, for writing so many fine texts.

I think the current text is spot on on that unfortunate charatcteristic of our people. Namely, that we are so very thoroug and take ideologies so terribly serious that we tend to place them above basic common sense until they become suicide cults (German National Socialism morphed into a sucide cult in 1945, with an orgy of self-directed violence, and the current Bundesrepublik’s state ideology is also becoming an ever more explicit, and rigidly enforced, self-cuckoldry and suicide cult).

Leaves the question open for me, what would Dr. Devlin suggest to those Germans (and there are still a lot of them, though silenced by the system) who do not want their country be ruined by that current insanity?

I think this has less to do with the doctrine of grace, which existed in every denomination, and more to do with the millenarian legacy of Protestantism, which sought to instantiate the Kingdom of God on earth rather than find the Kingdom of God within or beyond. It’s the same movement that has made the idea of “progress” and all that it entails the hegemonic idea by which people see and judge the world. In the end Merkel, Obama, et al are little different than King John of Munster.

  8. Luccas says:
    October 6, 2015 at 2:56 pm

I think this article is spot on, I though not a German myself am living here for 5 years now, and I see this everyday, Germans have a very strong sense of “social justice” its the most altruistic society I have ever known and I doubt there is an equally altruistic peoples anywhere in the world(maybe Scandinavia).

Its extremely easy to “guilt trip” a German and you don’t even need to mention WW2 or the Nazis.

I think this is very much genetic and not simply the result of the last 70 years of brainwashing.

Germans are sadly the biggest victims of their own sensibilities, they are very strict when it comes to following laws and procedures but have an extremely soft emotional underbelly and you can sell them basically anything as long as you appeal to their emotional side which is very underdeveloped and fragile.

Maybe that’s why Germans are the way they are, lacking EQ(Emotional IQ) they try to make it up with blind empathy they don’t really understand.

  9. Ralph Raico says:
    October 6, 2015 at 3:08 pm

An excellent article by Mr. Devlin. He writes: “All of us in the West are supposed to be responsible for the ills of the rest of the world, but only Germans have had their identity entirely constructed on guilt for seventy years.” Now, that is an amazing fact. The thousand year old history of this great people is reduced to a period of twelve years. Erased are the immense achievements of the Germans, in science (quantum mechanics, genetics, etc.), technology (printing, the automobile, and the jet engine, etc.) and the arts (um, music?). Personally, I pretty much keep up with the news and general commentary, and I am confronted with references to the Holocaust and the crimes of the Nazis every single day of my life. Somehow that is not the case with the crimes of the Communists, worse and committed over a longer period of time. How does that happen? Cui bono?

  11. Aus der Witz says:

Well, this all has to do with the preparation of the new Holocaust Religion.

It says: Germans (blond, light skinned, blue eyed, red Zaires types) are Amalek and need to die for good (this sentiment goes back far in time).

The new religion thinks that the the Chosen-Ones schould be worshipped, which will never happen as limited thinking cannot lead to expansion of spirit.

Jesus death was worth nothing as they suffered sooooo much more.

All in all – the Germans are being sacrificed for the New World Order. Some say that Jesus was not Jewish – but Bibel Texts speak about red haired Blue eyed Jesus. Listen to ClustervisionMach2 on youtube (in German).

The hatred of some dogmatic Jews against Germans is a part of their religion. So is the hatred for Christ. Hence, Christianity will die together with the Caucasians, if we believe crab. The hatred these primitive religions can summon is beyond logic and reason. But no, we who speak up are the haters even we did not act evil against anybody????

I, as a German refuse the primitive subhuman guilt trip. Only sick minds open up to such malady. One does not know what really happened as Jews write history for themselves and these haters have access to the kids. They all live of hatred and enjoy weak Germans.

Forever guilt ridden Germans will one day only laugh about the primitive, lowly minded, the negative forces which want to enslave humanity forever. See what happened in Russia when negative forces created a new human – Gulag, 80% of the mass murderers and people in charge were jews, If that is true what i read. That Gulag, some of the Dogmatists wish for all of humanity. It’s about time for all of humanity to disbelieve dogmatic religious tyranny – and, world watch glostend what happen to Germany will happen to the rest of humanity as Germany is ruled by Jews and their Allies.

Because of the lies Judaism gave to the world, the liars are now on the bottom scale of human Evolution never to be Trustee again. Some abusivr Jews – we need boundaries against some of them – the way we are abused by some of their best and their slaves via media, law, money is dark.

F the guilt complex, f their false history, f the lies. These people set the suffering of humanities victims apart so that only their illusory lives count.but, we all suffered from the psychology of warmongering. Some of he leading Jews will never give freedom or spirituality but only bring us to a subhuman standard of degradation – see the violence of their Hollywood and the stupid mtv music industry. We are supposed to waste our life away with their stupidity, their commercials. No thanks-enough is enough.

Refuse guilt… It is their imposition their Willy narrative — we have a Right to exist –live for truth and honest Human rights- exist without the degradation of their mythology And prophecx as the new illusory make belief.

Refuse dogma – refuse guilt. Ist perverse to be that negative. This Matrix is illusory anyway. No no no – we are all children of the universal Supreme Beings and that Being is love and loves all equal on the subtle plane.-
Say no to dishonesty, dogma, deception. Open up to be a free spiritual human being who can love as we are in touch with our true nature. Throw guilt in the trash can. We all are better than that.
