Igualdad:
el camino a una vida carente de significado

En un libro que escribió hace unos veinte años, Jonathan Bowden mencionó que el significado se origina en la diferencia, o desigualdad. Esto me interesa porque, antes de descubrir el texto, elaboré un argumento muy similar en un ensayo, publicado hace un año, donde ataqué la idea — aceptada casi universalmente en Occidente — de que la igualdad es un bien moral.

Mi argumento fue que la naturaleza del valor cualitativa (subjetiva) y cuantitativa (objetiva). El valor cualitativo existe cuando algo es especial, cuando es diferente en relación a otros ejemplos delo mismo porque tiene cualidades especiales o únicas. El valor cuantitativo existe cuando algo es superior, cuando es diferente en relación a otros ejemplos delo mismo porque es mesurablemente mejor o de una calidad superior.

Por supuesto, el valor cualitativo puede ser subsumido dentro de lo cuantitativo, por algo que puede ser superior porque es especial, de la misma forma en que el valor cuantitativo puede a veces ser subsumido dentro del valor cualitativo, por algo que puede que sea especial porque es superior.

No es necesario mencionar que los valores cualitativos y cuantitativos no son necesariamente intercambiables, sino que ambos son, sin embargo, maneras de valorar porque ambos son formas de diferenciar, y en ambos casos estamos hablando de alguna forma de cualidad surgida de la desigualdad.

El significado es, por supuesto, una forma de valor — específicamente, de valor cualitativo. Cuando algo tiene significado para nosotros, también es valioso — quizás no sea mediblemente superior que otros ejemplos de lo mismo, y el valor puede no ser cuantificable, pero, no obstante, existe subjetivamente. Se desprende de esto que un proceso de igualación consiste siempre y necesariamente en una destrucción del valor.

No hay conservación de valores a través de la transferencia, porque la igualdad necesita de la eliminación de la diferencia, y la calidad está creada a través de la diferencia, o de la desigualdad.  A su vez, se asume desde esto que si una buena vida es una vida significativa, entonces una buena vida tiene valor, y una mala, no.

Podemos concluir, entonces, que vivir en igualdad es una vida sin significado, y por tanto, una vida sin valor para la persona que la vive. Probablemente, una vida que es intercambiable con cualquier otra vida no tiene valor si el costo de reemplazarla es cero. Esto nunca es el caso, así que toda vida tiene algún valor, sin embargo, intercambiable. Pero fácilmente puede verse cómo la intercambiabilidad, que depende de la equivalencia (es decir, igualdad), reduce proporcionalmente el valor.

Ésta puede ser la razón de lo barata que era la vida bajo el comunismo soviético, un sistema que se basaba en la igualdad maximizada. Las tasas de suicidio eran altas, debido a que una vida bajo el sistema soviético era menos valiosa para la persona que la vivía, y el asesinato de masas era también alto, debido a que la vida de otras personas era generalmente menos valiosas para quienes estaban al mando.

Esto también puede ser la razón de por qué los humanos buscan agregar valor a sus vidas a través de estrategias de diferenciación, o desigualdad, individual o grupal, porque hay valor también en pertenecer a un grupo que es considerado superior o especial en alguna forma.

Nunca podrá haber igualdad perfecta, por lo que siempre se pueden encontrar maneras de dar significado a la vida (aunque si el nivel de significado es considerado como suficiente por algún individuo dado, es otro tema). Por otro lado, es difícil de imaginar el desear vivir mucho tiempo en un sistema donde cualquier tipo de diferenciación fuera completamente imposible — para una vida significativa sería imposible — y también sería imposible encontrar en la vida cosas significativas. De hecho, sólo un autómata sería capaz de vivir de esa forma, así que legítimamente podemos describir tal existencia como inhumana, y también como inhumano un perfecto sistema igualitario.

¿Hay alguna justificación, entonces, para considerar a la igualdad como un bien moral absoluto, que valga la pena perseguirlo por todos lados porque sí? Parece que no, debido a que la igualdad destruye todo lo que hace que la vida merezca ser vivida.

Puede argüirse que las políticas de igualdad han traído beneficios a una gran mayoría, haciendo a las sociedades occidentales muy atractivas para la gente que vive o busca vivir en ellas. Sin embargo, la búsqueda de políticas de igualdad es una de las características que han hecho a las sociedades occidentales distintas a la de las contrapartes no-occidentales, por lo que el valor de lo anterior yace en su desigualdad respecto de las sociedades no-occidentales. Más aún: aquéllos que buscan políticas de igualdad en Occidente lo hacen por razones no igualitarias: sentirse moralmente superiores, ser vistos como moralmente superiores o, lo que es lo mismo que lo último, eliminar barreras para un continuo incremento en el poder económico. Esto no es, por tanto, la igualdad que generalmente se busca, sino una forma de superioridad, ya sea moral o económica.

Peor aún, puede argumentarse que una de las características que la gente no-occidental considera menos atractivas en la modernidad liberal de Occidente es su nihilismo y materialismo superficial, ambos de los cuales son productos de la igualdad. La idea tras el liberalismo fue “liberar” al individuo, que era la medida de todas las cosas. Junto con otros poderes externos, el individuo fue liberado de lo transcendente, que implica jerarquía, y sin lo cual el mundo se volvió completamente material, y el incremento material se volvió la fuente de bienestar en la vida. El proyecto liberal también ha buscado liberar al individuo de las identidades colectivas de facto, basadas en factores externos a su poder para controlar, tales como la raza o género. El Marxismo, una ideología más radicalmente igualitaria, absorción de cuyas críticas al liberalismo resultó en una versión más igualitaria de este último, buscó eliminar la clase. Este proceso de “liberación” ha ignorado el hecho de que la gente busca significados dentro, o contra, las categorías que intentó devaluar o eliminar. El resultado es una pérdida de respeto por todo, y vale la pena destacar, en este contexto, cómo la primera generación de inmigrantes a menudo temen que sus hijos pierdan el respeto — por ellos, por sus padres, o por su cultura (comprendido racialmente) — a través de la Occidentalización, que hoy en día significa liberalización.

Como análisis final, la igualdad es el anatema de la buena vida, y sólo puede ser considerada como un mal. Por lo tanto, atacar la igualdad — en todas sus formas — es moralmente correcto, y cualquiera que busque crear un futuro con más sentido debería hacerlo abierta, orgullosamente, con vigor y con rabia.
