I greatly enjoyed this interview but there is something that I feel I might have explained better. When I said that ethnonationalism is inherently liberal, I meant in the Grantian definition. For Grant liberalism is the liberation of the passions and conservatism their restraint. Ethnic nationalism seeks to free the nation from imposed, state patriotisms in favour of more natural, innate ones.
I think it’s very much possible that starship troopers is neocon pro war propaganda. There’s a lot of that during that time period, most notably three kings, which has been reviewed to this effect at this website. Three Kings is practically a propaganda piece for the reinvasion of Iraq. Compared to that movie, starship troopers works at a more abstract general level. One sees it in other forms, such as Bridget Jones diary when she says,” I would rather have a job wiping Saddam Hussein‘s ass that work for you! “ There are probably others. That could be an interesting paper for someone to write; turn-of-the-century neocon propaganda in the media. Independence Day, also with the hint of foreknowledge—wasn’t one of the planes headed to the white house? Nothing in Hollywood movies is by chance. It’s a tightly controlled propaganda apparatus. Everything is about something specific, even if we might not have the knowledge to perceive it.
