Remembering Anthony M. Ludovici (January 8, 1882–April 3, 1971)
Greg JohnsonAnthony Mario Ludovici was born on January 8, 1882.
Ludovici was one of the first and most accomplished translators of Nietzsche into English and a leading exponent of Nietzsche’s thought. Ludovici was also an original philosopher in his own right. In nearly forty books, including eight novels, and hundreds of shorter works, Ludovici set forth his views on metaphysics, religion, ethics, politics, economics, the sexes, health, eugenics, art, modern culture, and current events with a clarity, wit, and fearless honesty that made him famous. Last year, Counter-Currents issued Ludovici’s previously unpublished autobiography, The Confessions of an Anti-Feminist. An excerpt from it, “On the Jewish Question,” has been published on this site, and F. Roger Devlin has reviewed it in “A Man Out of Season.”
A passionate, principled defender of aristocracy and conservatism and a fierce, uncompromising critic of egalitarianism in all its manifestations, Ludovici was consigned to obscurity after the Second World War. But in recent years, through the power of his thought and the promotional efforts of John V. Day, Ludovici’s writings have found a whole new audience. See Day’s essays:
- “Anthony Ludovici: Conservative from Another World,” originally published in Instauration.
- “What is Best Will Rule: Anthony Ludovici on Aristocracy and Democracy.”
I also wish to draw your attention to John Day’s extensive online archive of Ludovici’s writings.
John Day is also the editor of The Lost Philosopher: The Best of Anthony M. Ludovici.
The following excerpts from The Lost Philosopher are available on this website:
- “Ludovici on Feminism and Emasculation.”
- “In Defense of Vain Women.”

I am the translator of “Nietzsche His Life and Works” into spanish. It has been published as “Nietzsche Su Vida y Obras” in 3 countries: Spain with Editorial Fides, Argentina with Editorial Nomos, and Colombia with Editorial Casa de Asterion.
The reception, so far, is slow but good.
I love him
Dear Gregory Johnson,
I want to say thank you for remembering Anthony M. Ludovici’s birthday. He is one of the most important essayists that white nationalists should read. Until I visited you webzine I hadn’t heard of him.
Here are some people you should add to the birthday list: Henry Louis Mencken, Margaret Higgins Sanger, John Muir, Harry Elmer Barnes, Carleton Stevens Coon, Theodore Lothrop Stoddard and Edward Hallett Carr.
Keep up the hard work. I visit you webzine everyday.
