A few years ago, the late popular historian David McCullough published a biography of Wilbur and Orville Wright, inventors of the airplane. The book was deservedly successful, and I read it entirely for pleasure myself. The brothers were typical of their Northern European Protestant race: intelligent, soft-spoken, hard-working, plain almost to the point of austerity in their manner of living. (more…)

I intensely dislike the neologism “incel,” a portmanteau term for involuntary celibate. It seems to me an entirely unnecessary synonym for what has always been called a “bachelor,” or unmarried man. Growing up in a vestigially Christian society, I learned the faith’s traditional teaching about sexual morality: one could either get married or remain celibate, with either being a legitimate choice. One of the most pronounced current trends in American politics is the widening political gap between men and women (and concomitant depolarization of political affiliation across racial lines). Gen-Z men voted for Trump in large numbers, while Gen-Z women are overwhelmingly liberal. (more…)

Adolescence is the stubborn turd that just won’t flush. Here in its country of origin, the United Kingdom, the dismayingly popular Netflix series about so-called “toxic masculinity” is still dominating the mainstream news agenda, over a month after it was first released. (more…)

I saw a matinee of the feverishly hyped film Joker at a megaplex in rural Georgia on the first day of its official release. As we handed our tickets to the small, doughy, middle-aged female theater worker, she demanded to inspect my wife’s purse. (more…)

The wifejak meme has been the source of some controversy recently. Wifejak is a spin on the wojak meme. She’s a relatable character who says “woman things” that anyone who has been around a woman knows well. Essentially, the meme (which has existed for months but is apparently only now generating controversy after husbandjak, daughterjak, and sonjak have entered the stage) is lightly poking fun at women for being predictable and archetypical. I think the decline of guitar music, an all-conquering cultural force in the latter half of the 20th century, has been a tragedy and not just because what has come to replace it is qualitatively inferior. I think it’s bad because starting a band used to be a pro-social thing that white kids could do together. I think it was Dave Mustaine who once said that playing in a band together was as close as four guys could get without having sex. (more…)

Japan has virtually eliminated violent crime, has a high standard of living, is technologically advanced, stays out of wars, and remains a top world economy despite having seen better days. Japan even has a homogeneous population. Many on the Right therefore point to Japan as an example of the success of positive nationalism. (more…)
