I wonder if H.P. Lovecraft was influenced by Grant’s The Passing of the Great Race. In the Lovecraft story, “The Shadow Out of Time,” the alien creatures whose minds leap about in time and into different bodies to avoid destruction as a species are called – the Great Race.
It’s contradictory to be both a racial preservationist and a eugenicist, since the eugenicist regards the white race (or any race, for that matter) as no more than a good starting point. Even if we confine genetic “improvements” to IQ and other personality factors, a thorough understanding of the genetic basis of these things will certainly lead to a situation in which the same techniques can be applied regardless of race, thus making race irrelevant. And what will be left of the white race when transhumanism runs its course? Kurzweil suggests that soon, humans will be so integrated with computers that the biological organism will be no more than an appendage, and a pretty useless one at that. Such techniques are the death of a race, not its preservation, and still less its salvation.
Thinking that preservationists want to preserve something and keep it that way fixed in time is pretty autistic. One can want to preserve a race and its strengths while wanting to improve said race’s strengths and diminish it’s weaknesses. Eugenics and transhumanism are different. You could say that transhumanists are a strain of eugenics but I doubt they themselves would agree with this. They wish to become human plus by combining with tech and altering themselves in real time. Eugenics wants to maintain hygiene in a population by avoiding undesirable traits like disease and in some cases aggression through selective breeding and sterilization. Something we do with convicted pedophiles.
