I opened it, smelling the heavy aroma of tobacco and old paper as I set my eyes upon a draft of The Brigade, Harold’s fourth Northwest novel. I agreed to be one of the proofreaders, and got to work. The recent overwhelmingly hostile public response to this year’s Pride Month is encouraging. Pushback against the LGBTQ agenda should not be entirely surprising, as it’s been a long time in coming. Two years ago, governors from socially conservative states were vetoing anti-trans legislation, but nowadays, they’ve changed their outlook. (more…)

In response to 2014’s absurdly overblown and preposterously misguided public outrage over Michael Brown’s shooting death in Ferguson, Missouri , President Barack Obama asked the federal government to allocate $263 million to provide police departments nationwide with body cameras so they could finally film all these white-supremacist cops wantonly and sadistically brutalizing black bodies in the streets. It seems ironic that Tom George’s 2022 film See How They Run was released in England a day before Queen Elizabeth’s death. The film, a whodunit that follows the genre’s steps like following footprints in the snow, wants to be funny and breathe life into the old form. But, like recent events with the monarchy, this film is a kind of death watch on England and English culture, especially that middlebrow artifact known as the murder mystery. (more…)
