Jim Goad has produced a short film to accompany his latest essay, “The Mother Who Mistook an Oven for a Crib,” on Mariah Thomas, a black woman who burned her one-month-old baby to death in her oven last week, telling authorities that she mistook the oven for her baby’s crib. See below.

A strangely powerful, audio-visual tour-de-force of Black dysfunction. The signature Jim Goad commentary; the low-key, creepy background music; the unrelentingly, unmistakably “black” images, and — oh, dear! — that smoke effect, curling up around the stills of the infant; all combine to give a deeper import to yet another lesson on the banality of evil.
