I attended a small (about 160 students per grade) Midwestern high school only ten minutes from a metropolis, but the neighborhood had large houses with high property taxes and the district had gerrymandered the auto-enrollment zone to keep the school about 90 percent white with a smattering of Asians (several boys named Tenzin). If you’ve heard about Major General Edwin “Ted” Walker (1909-1993), it is likely in the context of the Kennedy assassination. There are a number of conspiracy theories that accuse Walker of having a role in the plot to slay JFK, and a 1964 movie called Seven Days in May featured a Walker-like character, US Air Force General James Mattoon Scott (Burt Lancaster), attempting to carry out a Deep State coup against an idealistic, peace-loving President who just happened to resemble JFK’s supporters’ idea of him.

On November 18, 1978, the congregation of the Peoples Temple, a radical, socialist/Leftist congregation of the mainline Protestant Disciples of Christ, died in a massive murder-suicide event on the orders of their leader, Jim Jones. Their suicide method, drinking poisoned water containing fruit drink mix on the orders of a narcissistic, sociopathic megalomaniac, gave rise to the expression, “drink the Kool-Aid.”
Much ink has been spilled about how the theology of Jim Jones was so strange and false that it was only natural that the Peoples Temple would end in disaster. There has also been a great deal of analysis of Jones’ own nature. (more…)

In case you missed it, I recently I got into a little tiff with one of my blogging idols, Kim du Toit. On April 28, Counter-Currents published an article of mine, “Kim du Toit and the Freedom Paradox,” in which I more or less introduced Kim to the Alt Right and took him to task in a nice and respectful way over our political differences. Kim was one of my favorite bloggers of the previous decade and was just coming off an eight-year hiatus, so I figured the time was right. (more…)
