The trial of Axel Rudakubana began and ended on the same day at Liverpool Crown Court in England. Known as “the Southport killer” after he murdered three little girls in that English town in July last year, Rudakubana’s trial had an immediate twist in an already tangled tale, and one nobody saw coming. Given that the trial was slated to last 4-6 weeks, there was no need for the qualifying word “allegedly” to be used after the morning of day one, as the killer immediately pled guilty to all sixteen charges laid against him. Right when I think that people couldn’t lie any more audaciously than they do, that the gaslighting couldn’t possibly get more migraine-inducing, and that maybe things aren’t quite as bad as they seem, along come the English media and government to remind me that George Orwell was an Englishman.

The tiny town of Mashpee, Massachusetts is nestled on the hook-shaped peninsula of Cape Cod, which was named by an English explorer way back in 1602. Mashpee lies about 39 miles south of Plymouth, Massachusetts, where English Pilgrim settlers first celebrated the distinctly American tradition of Thanksgiving in 1621. Mashpee lies about 30 miles north of Martha’s Vineyard, which is perhaps most famous as the setting for the 1975 film Jaws, in which a great white shark ate a series of great white people. One would think that news the FBI has arrested an active US Marine for threatening to go on a shooting rampage against US citizens would be a major news story.
But one would think wrong. As is so often the case, we have ourselves an inconvenient perpetrator and an unprotected target group.
Last Friday at a Marine base in Twentynine Palms, California, federal agents arrested 23-year-old black New Jersey native Joshua Cobb and charged him with transmitting a threat in interstate and foreign commerce.
