Editor’s Note: March 31st marks the 117th birthday of Robert Brasillach, the French journalist, novelist, film historian, and man of the Right who was sentenced to death and executed by firing squad for “intellectual crimes” he was alleged to have committed as a German collaborator during the Second World War. The translation below is offered as a commemoration, and links to other resources regarding Brasillach’s life and work are at the end.

Time was that the only noticeable connection between Ireland and Africa was that Kofi Annan’s head looked like a pint of Guinness. Today, however, as I mentioned in my previous column, it turns out that Ireland’s newly globalized patron saint, St Patrick, is now also the presiding demi-deity of Nigeria too. How come?

Although Ireland famously never had any colonial empire, being a long-term white colony of London itself, it did once send many Catholic missionaries out across the world, including to Nigeria, where as a direct consequence around 15% of the native black population today genuflect towards Rome. Earlier this month on Counter-Currents, I wrote about the Left-wing Irish ruling elite’s wretched attempts to transform the country’s main female religious icon, St Brigid, into the patron saint not of Ireland, but of abortion, lesbianism, and globalization. Then, on March 17, St Patrick’s Day arrived, and these very same godawful eejits decided to repeat exactly the same trick a second time. Their new victim was the nation’s chief male patron saint, St Patrick, who was spuriously reconfigured into the presiding deity of mass immigration, anti-colonialism, and “tolerance” in all its forms. It has just over one year since the publication of Edward Dutton’s biography of orator and activist Jonathon Bowden. As of March 29th, it has now been exactly 14 years since its subject matter passed away at the tragic age of 49, an event that Dutton’s well-researched biography sheds new light on.[1] The book itself was a timely affair. In 1995, Jonathan Bowden self-published his Collected Works in 6 volumes (London: Avant-Garde, 1995), edited by Jürgen Schwartz, one of Bowden’s pen names. The six volumes comprise 27 distinct books, 12 of which had been previously published. Altogether, the Collected Works contain more than 2,600 pages of rare early Bowden. (more…)

America lost the Iran War on the first day.

Pyrrhus of Epirus was one of the greatest generals of the ancient world. In 279 BCE, Pyrrhus defeated the Romans in the Battle of Asculum in Southern Italy. But the battle was so costly to Pyrrhus that he remarked that one more such “victory” would ruin him. This is the origin of the term “Pyrrhic victory,” meaning a victory that is really a defeat.

The lesson here is that the real victor is not the one who prevails on the battlefield but rather whoever gains power from the fight. By that standard, some battles have no victors. By that standard, the United States lost the Iran War on the first day. (more…)

The ruling elites in Canada want a silent citizenry incapable of challenging them. They want to avail themselves of the boons of technology with none of its drawbacks; they wish to become a political and economic class immune to criticism. The multicultural system that they preside over is inherently unstable; and increasingly, maintaining the status quo requires authoritarian controls over free speech.

In theory, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of expression under section 2(b): “Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: . . . freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication.” This was once a cornerstone of Canadian democracy that includes the right to communicate ideas, even unpopular ones. The first is one which I believe has a substantial amount of evidence suggesting it is true and the second is one which I consider baseless.
