Translator’s Note:
The following is a translation of Belgian Rexist leader and SS-Standartenführer Léon Degrelle’s final speech in the 1976 documentary Le Volksführer, made during his postwar exile in Spain. The title is editorial.
I sometimes made huge mistakes. But what actually is a mistake in politics? And when I look back, I have only one sentiment: an enormous regret. Regret that we did not succeed, that we were not able to create this European world which would be the master of the universe for all time, which made the white race the first race, with the great mastery of the spirit.
And when we see what there is on the other side, what 30 years of the others’ victory has given, this anarchy in the world, this rout of the white world, this desertion throughout the universe; when we see in our own countries the decay of morals, the fall of the fatherland, the fall of the family, the fall of social order; when we see this appetite for material goods which has replaced the great flame of the ideal which animated us, well then, truly, between the two we chose the right side. The small, miserable Europe of today, of this impoverished Common Market, cannot give happiness to men. Consumer society poisons humanity rather than elevating it.
So, for our part, we dreamed of something great, and we have only one desire, that this spirit be reborn. And with all my might, up to the last moment of my existence, I will fight for this. So that what was our struggle and our martyrdom, will one day be the resurrection.

Power! The spirit lives on!
Wonderful speech of this incredible man. Before embarking on the Russian campaign Degrelle was an important figure in Belgian politics – not to mention obviously financially well-off and overall ‘comfortable’ – and yet he decided to go fighting, as a mere private despite being offered a higher rank right at the start.
The idealism and courage of many of the Axis Leaders is simply awe-inspiring. Degrelle’s Russian campaign, Hess’s solo flight, Heindrych (secretly) performing flying missions as ‘merely’ one of the pilots, Hitler and his followers marching straight towards the machine guns in the March on the Feldherrnhalle etc. No words needed. Drawing any comparisons to democratic politicians would only be an insult.
Funny story: once, a rather lefty Prof. who was teaching me at the time ended up in my student-apartment while visiting his daughter who was a neighbour and a friend of mine, and saw the beautiful, large, black & white portrait of Degrelle on my wall, resulting in an amusing reaction. (I’m from Belgium, and Degrelle is of course generally recognized (and despised by the sheeple) here)
Somebody should subtitle the entire video.
Good idea. The link in the article is now to a version with English subtitles.
Thank you very much! This is great. Although what I meant was that the entire film should be subtitled – a huge undertaking, I’m aware!
Finally, there’s a dearth of stuff from our heroes with a successful plan now that 90% of Anglosphere WN is just Jew-blind conservatism. In the end , we need to read more Degrelle to put our historical mission in perspective, not that feeb Sam Francis.
The Axis seems to have had all the heart, all the idealism man is capable of on its side. Is on the Allied side something comparable in strength of conviction, to the almost magical power of will, the joyful expectation of victory and hope of a bright future, the heartfelt expression of a future to be attained than one hears from people like Degrelle? He represents a type, as much as Churchill and Roosevelt represented a type on the Allied side.
I have also recently listened to a speech by Moseley, with similar spirit-raising tone.
If one hears the mercantile speeches of Churchill with his stated war aim of victory, victory at any cost, but without a plan as to why attaining victory is even a worthwhile goal, one feels immediately deflated. It is tragic that the merchants, the people who longed for nothing than the life of a retiree in luxury stand victorious. Or perhaps: stood victorious.
I hope that there will be another chance to rally strength towards a victory of higher man.
Legend!
What a haunting speech. This has mentally followed me around the past few days. Without this website men like Leon Degrelle, and their ideas, would be totally unknown to me. For that I am eternally grateful, Dr. Johnson.
