Whenever the self-proclaimed “progressives” lose a power play they suddenly experience a collective sphincter muscle collapse and react as if they’re teetering on the brink of an apocalypse, as was in stark evidence after Donald Trump derailed Hillary Clinton’s “The Corruption Express” headed for the White House Station. The Hollywood idiots, of course, were apoplectic. The outpouring and duration of mass hysteria in the aftermath of the 2016 election were unprecedented.

Like the rest of the West, Canada has been lurching from one supposed crisis of white racism to another, but this country’s specialty remains aboriginal victimology. The most recent hysteria flared up in June with “discoveries” of “mass graves” outside former church-run residential schools for natives. The furor triggered predictably sanctimonious outrage, cancellation of many July 1st Canada Day celebrations, arson attacks that destroyed several dozen churches, and international condemnation of a Canadian disgrace supposedly on par with the world’s worst atrocities. Pope Francis effectively condemned and restricted the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) last week. The Vicar of Christ issued a letter revoking Pope Benedict XVI’s Summorum Pontificum, which welcomed the Latin Mass and encouraged its spread. Francis said this policy change was needed to curb division within the church. The papal edict argues TLM congregations sow discord, and they need to recognize Vatican II as a fact.

Trevor Lynch can wax eloquent over Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge Over the River Kwai, but when I choose a great movie hero from that era, forget Lawrence or Lt. Colonel Nicholson; my man is Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) in Robert Wise’s 1966 The Sand Pebbles, an epic action film examining a common man whose performance by Steve McQueen is an excellent depiction of a true, common, American.

Jake Holman is in the China of 1926, a machinist’s mate assigned to the San Pablo, a gunboat on duty in the backwaters. (more…)

“How would you feel if you were black?” We’ve all heard that one before, right? John Howard Griffin sought to discover the answer in 1959 by radically altering his appearance. His book Black Like Me (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1961) told the story. As the opening blurb explains:

Griffin worked with Martin Luther King, Dick Gregory, Saul Alinsky, and NAACP Director Roy Wilkins throughout the Civil Rights era. He taught at the University of Peace with Nobel Peace Laureate Father Dominique Pire, and delivered more than a thousand lectures in Europe, Canada and the US.
