What made you decide to write a Young Adult novel?

Actually, it was Greg Johnson’s idea. We did a text interview like this one in 2020 for my children’s book My Mirror Tells a Story, which was also published by The White People’s Press, and one of the questions he asked was, “Do you want to try your hand at young adult fiction some day?” My first thought was no. I had just published my novel Charity’s Blade and was in the midst of compiling my essay collection Solzhenitsyn and the Right. At the time, I was heavy into the grown-up stuff, and so young adult fiction was just not on my radar. (more…)

Jim Goad’s The Redneck Manifesto is a groundbreaking, irreverent polemic against the stigmatization of the white working class in American culture. It was published by Simon and Schuster in 1997. In pugnacious and often hilarious prose, Goad shreds the racial and political taboos of the era and slaughtered many a sacred cow. The Redneck Manifesto brought a critical eye to then-radical terms like “white supremacy,” racial justice, and “anti-fascism” which had yet to reach widespread exposure outside of Left-wing universities, but would terrorize the American political landscape in subsequent decades. Roots, the mother of the television miniseries, recently reached its 45th anniversary. It was based on Alex Haley’s book Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The story begins with Kunta Kinte, a young Mandinka tribesman from the Gambia who was captured and put on a slave ship bound for colonial America. It further covers his descendants and their tribulations, ending during the Radical Reconstruction.

All told, the acting is pretty decent for a TV program, featuring several existing and up-and-coming stars. LeVar Burton, who played the younger Kunta Kinte, does the haunted look just about as well as Nicolas Cage. (more…)
