For years, Portland, OR had an unshakable reputation as America’s whitest city:

“How the whitest city in America appears through the eyes of its black residents” (Washington Post, 2015)

 “Portland is the Whitest U.S. City – Why Demographics are Rapidly Shifting” (GoLocalPDX, 2015)

 “The Racist History of Portland, the Whitest City in America” (The Atlantic, 2016)

“‘Livability’ in the Whitest City in America” (Story Maps, 2020)

 “Is Portland still the whitest big city in America?” (Oregon Live, 2022, and the answer was “yes”)

But now, in what some will view as a milestone and others as a millstone, the City of Roses has been demoted to America’s second-whitest city. (more…)

Last week, for the first time in too long a time, I found myself again in Rome. Europe is changing so rapidly that returning to once-familiar places no longer feels like a homecoming. It feels like entering an alien terrain for the first time. I perceived a similar sensation when I visited Ireland again after an absence of a few years. Shops and locales that I frequented have been closed down or replaced and renamed. Inflation — and in the case of Ireland, a sudden and record-breaking influx of migrants and “refugees” — has caused prices of the formerly cheap hostels where I used to stay to increase by 1,000%. Of white Americans aged 18 to 35, 87.3% of Democrats, 85.1% of Independents, and 72.2% of Republicans plan on below-replacement reproduction, meaning two or fewer children.

33.2% of all respondents, 35.9% of Democrats, 38.5% of Independents, and 23.1% of Republicans said that the financial cost of raising children overall was a barrier to having children. (more…)

Every now and again I like to have a peek at the most-wanted lists across my insane country. If you look at some of the police websites from the major cities across Canada, you might notice a few things about the type of people that populate them: There are a few white people who have done questionable things, even awful things. That’s because the white majority, although dwindling, is still present here. But it is glaringly obvious in places such as Toronto that the most violent offenders wanted for murder, for example, are blacks, Arabs, and Asians. (more…)
