Hungary’s Viktor Orbán is both the smartest politician in Europe and, from my point of view, the most ideologically sound. Thus it came as a big surprise that he was soundly trounced in last Sunday’s elections. Why did this happen, and what does it bode for Hungary and for the nationalist-populist Right more broadly?

As an American, I can relate better to Rome than to Greece, and that’s not necessarily a good thing. I have written two books on Plato. I love Greek philosophy, literature, and art. But they are not mine. I’ve just appropriated them. Like the Romans did. (more…)

A lot of people are down in the dumps because of Trump’s shocking betrayals on immigration, the Epstein files, and especially the expanding debacle in Iran. Here are a few words of consolation. Things aren’t that bad.
As a White Nationalist, my political goal is to restore white homelands ravaged by globalization, low white fertility, and non-white migration. Our ranks are steadily growing, but we remain a political minority. Until we are no longer a minority and have the power to implement our preferred policies, we must content ourselves with influencing existing parties to adopt policies we like. (more…)

On April Fools’ Day, Donald Trump addressed the nation about the Iran War. It would have been too painful to listen to his adenoidal droning and borscht-belt insult comedian shtick, so I just read the transcript. He said nothing new. It was just a live version of his social media tweets: rambling, mendacious, self-contradictory, delusional, emotionally labile, and laced with insults and threats. I wish he were joking, but he probably wasn’t.
When it was all over, however, I was certain of one thing: Trump has learned nothing so far. So he’s going to send in ground troops. (more…)

In my essay “Notes on Strauss and Husserl,”[1] I argued that Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology had a formative influence on Leo Strauss in two ways. First, Husserl’s method of dismantling traditional concepts in order to return to and describe the experiences they were based upon influenced Strauss’ recovery of the classical ideas of nature and natural right. America lost the Iran War on the first day.
Pyrrhus of Epirus was one of the greatest generals of the ancient world. In 279 BCE, Pyrrhus defeated the Romans in the Battle of Asculum in Southern Italy. But the battle was so costly to Pyrrhus that he remarked that one more such “victory” would ruin him. This is the origin of the term “Pyrrhic victory,” meaning a victory that is really a defeat.
The lesson here is that the real victor is not the one who prevails on the battlefield but rather whoever gains power from the fight. By that standard, some battles have no victors. By that standard, the United States lost the Iran War on the first day. (more…)

In her short life of 39 years, O’Connor wrote two novels, 31 short stories, more than a hundred lectures, essays, and reviews, and a vast number of letters. Her fiction reflects her strong identity as both a Catholic and a white Southern woman.
