They say that you should never meet or get to know your heroes, but I completely disagree.

I have been very fortunate in my life to have gotten to know many of the heavy metal musicians who I grew up listening to. Whether I was working backstage at concerts or on tour with my favorite bands, I have seen many of my heroes at their best and worst. Discovering that your heroes and idols also flatulate and drink too much might ruin the music and childhood memories for many people, but for me, it only made the music and experiences with my heroes that much more exciting and authentic. On Thursday, as it must to all men, death came to Marvin Lee Aday, known professionally as Meat Loaf. Mr. Loaf was perhaps an acquired taste, but he was certainly an energetic performer — on one occasion, falling off the stage, only to insist on completing his tour in a wheelchair. Despite his prodigious girth and periodic drug abuse, he more than fulfilled his Biblical three score and ten, dying at 74. (more…)

The Yuppie Handbook‘s cover illustration is brimming with nostalgia. The tawdry insides are brimming with dreck.

Has it really been 40 years since The Yuppie Handbook? No, its copyright page says it came out January 1, 1984. But the book was so drenched in early-‘80s sensibility that it was already looking dated on its publication date.

Coming back to it today, one gets a pungent whiff of nostalgia and wonderment. (more…)

Nigel Brown spent over 30 years in the skinhead subculture. He played in the Rock Against Communism (RAC) scene starting in 1985: No Remorse, White Lightning, Broadsword, Retaliator, Celtic Warrior, and others. No Remorse, Fortress, and Celtic Warrior in particular were among the most famous skinhead bands of their day. Now Nigel is concentrating on his solo project.

Nigel is a very nice and intelligent guy. He recently moved from Australia to Berlin, where he lives with his girlfriend. I believe we will hear more about him and his music. (more…)
