As a child, I was fascinated by the collection of old English coins my grandfather kept in a box to remind him of better monetary times once the nation had turned to decimal coinage in 1971, as a preparatory measure for joining what was later to become the EU. The old £sd tokens were all much nicer-looking, better designed, and more pleasingly chunky and substantial than their decimal successors, but the way their system actually fitted together was utterly incomprehensible to me. This was supposed to be a year-end book roundup, but I had a difficult end of year. So for the present I’ll pretend this is the 53rd or 54th week of 2023 (a nasty year altogether).

When my husband died a few weeks ago, I found a number of “overdue” library books in all manner of places. I stacked them by the door. That’s pretty much how we did things here. He’d take out a lot of books and then, when he saw me making an exit, he’d go, “Oh, if you’re going out, could you take those back to the library?” He’d say that even if I was just going out to the trash bay. I knew an older British lady many years ago with whom I got along rather well. We bonded over our shared conservativism as well as our similar takes on various cultural touchstones in the English-speaking world. On one topic, however, we seemed to differ more than she let on. I shared with her my naïve opinion that Winston Churchill should be considered the man of the twentieth century. (more…)

Looking at the list of Nobel Laureates, one cannot help but notice who rules the world and what political agenda they intend to impose. Sometimes, in fact, the Nobel Prize becomes a means to spread hate propaganda against the enemies of the System.

For example, this year’s Nobel prizes have aimed at supporting the struggle of the sexes in our countries (Claudia Goldin), reinforcing the dwindling confidence in the COVID vaccines (Weissman and Karikó), and slamming Israel’s main enemy in the region, the Islamic Republic of Iran, by the way they allegedly treat their women (Narges Mohammadi) — now that the United States military has been definitively driven out of the Taliban’s Afghanistan and the women there no longer matter.
