Post-Henry Nowak Policing

It is highly unlikely that anyone reading this does not by now know the name of Henry Nowak. Henry was an 18-year-old English student who died in police custody in December of last year after a false allegation of racism was made by his Sikh murderer, which meant that the attending police officers treated the crime scene as a racist incident rather than the stabbing attack that it was. Something is Rotten in the Fourth Estate

What can I know? The question was famously posed by the 16th-century French essayist, Michel de Montaigne. But his was a metaphysical question, whereas if we bring the question into our own age, it has become more straightforwardly ontological. In fact, we can even say that it has become informational. In terms of the expanded info-world in which we now live, what we can know is what we are told, and the media is often the curator of that knowledge. (more…)

Black fatigue UK

Not all imports from America to the UK are healthy, but there is one which is definitely welcome in beleaguered Britain, tariff or no tariff: black fatigue. This construction has gone viral in the US, and British commentators are beginning to follow suit. It’s an interesting little buzz-phrase, “black fatigue”, because it means two totally different things at the same time. The term has cognitive dissonance. (more…)

Government Efficiency

Sir Keir Starmer and his Labour government have taken far too much flak for my liking, and it’s time to defend the old school tie and point out Labour’s successes since a handful of people tore themselves away from daytime TV to vote them into office in July. After a string of electoral losses to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK at local level, Labour were facing another round of defeats in similar elections next May, and have come up with a foolproof plan to avoid these drubbings at the ballot box. Sir Keir Starmer must have had mixed emotions when looking at his recent approval ratings in the opinion of the Great British public. On the one hand, he is polling at about the same level as Nicolae Ceauşescu was when the Romanian army took him and his wife out onto waste ground and shot them against a wall on Christmas Day, 1989, at the climax of the Romanian Revolution.
