American liberals are torn over our national symbols. On one hand, they claim them as their own and say they represent everything they love–multiculturalism, equality, anti-fascism, and DEMOCRACY. On the other, they will say at times these symbols offend them and must be replaced. This conflict was encapsulated last week by New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay. (more…)

I have a friend who’s a big sports fan, especially college football. He’s crazy for the local State university (which we will call “State”) and hates the slightly more prestigious state University (which we will call “the U”). It’s really not hate, of course. It’s more of an identity/anti-identity thing. Despite not having attended either university, he has always identified with State, which, in his local setting, also means identifying as not-U. (more…)

For most of my life, I have never really felt patriotic about America or being an American. The only time I felt a strong connection to America was during Donald Trump’s presidential campaign of 2016. Nikola Šubić Zrinski is an opera written in 1876 by Croatian composer Ivan Zajc that retells the Siege of Szigetvár. It is Zajc’s most accomplished work and is considered the national opera of Croatia. An excellent recording of the opera was released in late July featuring the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra (more…)

Directed by Amir Bar-LevPat Tillman of the 75th Ranger Regiment was killed in action on April 22, 2004 in Afghanistan. In the grand scheme of things, Tillman’s death was not all that remarkable. America was engaged in two wars at the time, and soldiers, especially those in especially dangerous jobs like the Combat Engineers or the Rangers, were being killed every day. (more…)
