The French-language news portal Breizh-Info has published a long interview in French with Hungarian Member of Parliament László Toroczkai, who is the leader of the opposition nationalist parliamentary group Mi Hazánk Mozgalom. The following is an English translation.

László Toroczkai has been a leading figure in Hungarian nationalism for 25 years. His biography has few equals in this political milieu. He began as a young parliamentary assistant working with the Hungarian Justice and Life Party, or MIÉP, in the late 1990s, which was a nationalist party that had parliamentary representation between 1998 and 2002. Jak jsem uvedl ve svém předchozím článku, kde jsem proběhnuvší maďarské volby zasadil do širšího kontextu, očekávání pravice byla skromná. Průzkumy sice naznačovaly, že Viktor Orbán a jeho strana Fidesz s největší pravděpodobností budou vládnout i čtvrté volební období v řadě (celkově páté), ale průzkumy se často mýlí. Mnozí se obávali, že levicově-liberální opozice, která poprvé vystupovala jako jednotný blok, by ho mohla sesadit, nebo přinejmenším snížit podporu Fideszu a upřít mu nadpoloviční většinu v parlamentu, které se těší nepřetržitě od roku 2010. As I related in my previous article explaining the background to yesterday’s national election in Hungary, expectations on the Right were modest going into it. While the polls indicated that Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party would most likely win a fourth consecutive term in office (his fifth overall), polls are often wrong. Many feared that the Left-liberal opposition, which for the first time was acting as a united bloc, could unseat him, or at the very least reduce Fidesz’s support and deny them a supermajority in Parliament, as they have enjoyed continuously since 2010. When I think about Estonia, I think about Kalevipoeg, Estonia’s national epic by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald. To me, this poem best represents the Estonian people, whose history, language, and mythology are distinct compared to the rest of Europe. The Estonian Declaration of Independence, created on February 24th, 1918, even quotes an excerpt from the last chapter of Kalevipoeg. (more…)

On the 19th and 20th of December, 2015, I attended a nationalist gathering in Ásotthalom, a small Hungarian town on the Serbian border and a crisis point in the Middle Eastern/African invasion. I first heard about the gathering from the mayor of Ásotthalom himself, László Toroczkai, as I stood among tens of thousands at the conclusion of the Warsaw 2015 Independence Day march on November 11th.
