Quick question: Did Jeffrey Epstein kill himself?
If you say “no,” then you’re a conspiracy theorist. Or, at least, you are buying into this one conspiracy theory. And why not? (more…)

Netflix thinks pimping preteens is a great way to market its new movie Cuties. The French film follows a dance troupe of 11-year-old girls who discover their “femininity.” Netflix advertised the film with images of the girls in suggestive outfits, which inevitably drew a public backlash. The streaming giant apologized for the advertisements (more…)
My initial reaction to comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s keynote address to the Anti-Defamation League and his follow-up editorial for the Washington Post was to laugh it off. He’s a comedian. Not only that, he’s what I would call a practical joke comedian: someone who makes ordinary people the butt of his humor. Sort of like Andy Kaufman, but nastier and more cynical. As a result, part of his living is embarrassing and humiliating innocent folks. (more…)
Many of my readers will remember the “classic” Monty Python sketch in which a gaggle of impossibly stupid aristocrats, all with buckteeth and double-barreled names, gimp about an athletic field competing for the title of “Upper Class Twit of the Year.” (more…)

Republic of Lies: American Conspiracy Theorists and Their Surprising Rise to Power
New York: Henry Holt, 2019
Anna Merlan’s Republic of Lies exemplifies the typical Leftist outrage over the recent rise of nationalism on the Right. The day Jeffrey Epstein turned up dead in a New York jail cell, I decided I needed to write something about Eyes Wide Shut (1999), Stanley Kubrick’s last and weakest movie.
Epstein has quickly faded from the headlines, so let me remind you briefly of who he was. Epstein was an American Jew who enjoyed immense wealth from unknown sources, hobnobbed with the global elite, including Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew, (more…)

Many have been inspired by the Epstein affair to put fingers to keyboard and use it as a vehicle for their own particular hobby-horse. That is not my intention, and the insights I can offer are mostly background about Robert Maxwell, Ghislaine Maxwell’s father. It’s a fascinating story of opportunism and intrigue. This won’t be my usual, carefully considered analysis, but rather an “information dump” of what I know.

Any discussion of the plausibility of conspiracies has to start with MK Ultra—one of the most bizarre “conspiracy theories” that turned out, by all official accounts, to be completely and entirely true. MK Ultra was a CIA program that began in the early 1950s and operated at full scale from then until around 1964. The program was reduced in scope in 1964 and then again in 1967 and wasn’t officially put to an end until 1973 [1]—although 14-year CIA veteran Victor Marchetti claimed in 1977 that the CIA’s assurances that it had stopped the program were nothing more than a “cover story.”
