Ann Widdecombe is dead, and what has emerged since should unsettle anyone paying attention to the state of political discourse in the West. Her death was confirmed Friday morning by her management, after she was found dead in her isolated rural home near Haytor, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Police believe she was attacked around 12:30pm the previous Wednesday, having failed to appear for a scheduled TV interview that afternoon. A 28 year old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in South Yorkshire on Saturday. Initially, police said there was nothing to suggest a terrorism link. That has now changed. Counter Terrorism Policing has taken over the investigation, and the suspect has been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. (more…)

The debate around immigration has long centered on its economic costs and benefits. Much of the populist concern has focused on low-skilled immigrants, those who consume more in public services than they contribute in taxes, placing a fiscal burden on the host country. This framing, while not without merit, misses a more consequential and politically thorny dimension of the immigration question: the influence of high-skilled, cognitively capable immigrant groups who, despite their productivity, can reshape the societies that receive them in ways that are not always in the interest of the native population. During the past week, there have been a series of disturbances across the United Kingdom that constitute one of the more serious episodes of civil unrest the country has experienced in recent years. In Belfast, nights of rioting followed a brutal knife attack carried out by Hadi Alodid, a Sudanese national, against Stephen Ogilvie, who lost an eye and sustained severe lacerations. I have been watching videos of Jared Taylor, Keith Woods, and David Zsutty making an elevator pitch to billionaires, and the exercise raises a question that most people would rather not seriously engage with: why not? The instinctive answer is brand risk. Billionaires, so the argument goes, cannot afford to have their names associated with white identity politics, because the association conjures images of extremism, historical atrocity, and social toxicity that no amount of philanthropic goodwill can offset. Qatar’s funding of university campuses, the reach of the Israeli lobby, Saudi Arabia’s investments in media and sport: these are debated loudly in Congress and across cable news. The scrutiny is warranted. Yet one foreign power, arguably the most consequential geopolitical rival the United States has ever faced, has managed to embed itself far more deeply and systematically into Western economies, institutions, and political life than any of the others, with comparatively little public attention. Yet the movement’s loudest advocates display a curious blind spot: they appear wholly impervious to the remarkable, and largely unthanked, role that Western scholars played in recovering, preserving, and transmitting much of the very non-Western knowledge they now wish to celebrate.
