In Canada, euthanasia, euphemistically termed Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), has become a legally sanctioned end-of-life option since its introduction in 2016. This program allows eligible individuals suffering from grievous medical conditions to request assistance from healthcare providers to end their own lives, either through “clinician-administered” drugs or self-administered prescriptions. It was just another day for two teenage girls attending class at Arizona State University.
One of the girls was black and overweight. Her name is Kaci Lenise-Charlie Sloan. Hey, don’t kill the messenger—I didn’t name her, I’m only reporting her name. I have no idea why the “Lenise” part is joined to “Charlie” with a hyphen. And why “Charlie”? (more…)

What are my Saturdays like? Quite dull. After my weekly pizza, I settle down to read, perhaps write and revise, pig out on a podcast, and go out sometimes if there is a play, concert, opera, or movie to get my interest. I don’t mind a nice sunset walk (more so now that I have skin cancer). I never watch TV. (more…)

Part 1 of 2 (Part 2 here)
While researching my essay on Die große Liebe, I learned of the infamous pro-euthanasia Nazi film Ich Klage an. I’m glad I did. Oftentimes I watch these old cinematic artifacts for solely academic purposes, but with Ich Klage an, I found myself actually being engrossed in the story.
Ich Klage an, or I Accuse, is a propaganda film about a doctor whose wife becomes ill with multiple sclerosis, a rapidly progressive disease which destroys the nerves and reduces people to paralyzed vegetables. (more…)

As artificial intelligence renders everyone unemployable, financial systems collapse, and healthcare systems become overburdened, maybe the only prudent, humane, and cost-effective solution would be to kill everyone.
“One third of Canadians fine with prescribing assisted suicide for homelessness,” reads a recent headline in Canada’s National Post. “Roughly the same number told a poll they were fine with approving MAiD [Medical Assistance in Dying] for someone whose only affliction was poverty,” adds the subhead. One would think that here, beyond The Wall, in the primordial snowscape that is the Great White North, we would still be revelling in wind-swept freedom and happiness, hunting caribou across the tundra all while sporting oversized, plaid shirt-jacket hybrids or shackets. Maybe at one time Canadians were like the wildings who sprang from George R. R. Martin’s degenerate noggin: living in the far north, periodically fending off White Walkers, communing with nature, and saying, “You know nothing, Justin Trudeau.” (more…)

The story of eugenics has been a tragedy. The basic idea goes back to antiquity – the belief that the world would become a much better place if healthy and intelligent people had the most children. But in the 20th century, in a bizarre and mysterious twist of fate, something went terribly wrong, and what began as an altruistic movement to help future generations ended in the barbaric murder of millions.
