Um personagem de uma de suas óperas era uma caricatura de um dos mais poderosos críticos de seu tempo. Não satisfeito em ridicularizá-lo, ele convidou este crítico para vir a sua casa e leu para ele o libreto na frente de seus amigos.

O nome deste monstro era Richard Wagner. Tudo o que eu disse sobre ele você pode encontrar registrado – em jornais, em registros de polícia, no testemunho de pessoas que o conheceram, em suas próprias cartas, nas entrelinhas de sua autobiografia. E o curioso sobre este histórico é que ele não tem a menor importância.

Porque este homem pequenino, adoentado, desagradável e fascinante estava certo o tempo todo. Nós é que estávamos errados. Ele foi um dos grandes dramaturgos do mundo; foi um grande pensador; foi um dos mais estupendos gênios musicais que, até agora, o mundo já viu. O mundo tinha a obrigação, sim, de sustentá-lo. As pessoas não tinham como saber dessas coisas na época, eu suponho; e no entanto, para nós, que conhecemos sua música, é como se elas devessem, sim, ter sabido. E daí se ele falava sobre si mesmo o tempo todo? Se ele tivesse falado sobre si durante vinte e quatro horas, todos os dias do tempo de sua vida, ele não teria emitido metade do número de palavras que outros homens disseram e escreveram sobre ele desde sua morte.

Quando se considera o que ele compôs – treze óperas e dramas musicais, onze delas ainda representadas, oito delas indiscutivelmente merecedoras de figurarem entre as grandes obras-primas musico-dramáticas mundiais – quando se ouve o que ele compôs, as dívidas e as dores de cabeça que as pessoas tiveram que suportar por causa dele não parecem ser um preço alto. Eduard Hanslick, o crítico que ele caricaturizou em Die Meistersinger e que o odiou desde então, agora só vive porque foi caricaturizado nesta ópera. As mulheres cujo coração ele partiu há muito estão mortas; e o homem que nunca pôde amar ninguém além de si mesmo ofereceu-lhes uma expiação imortal, eu acho, com Tristan und Isolde. Pense no luxo com o qual, por algum tempo pelo menos, o destino recompensou Napoleão, o homem que arruinou a França e pilhou a Europa; e então talvez você concorde que alguns milhares de dólares em dívidas não foi um preço alto demais a se pagar pela trilogia do Anel.

E daí se ele foi infiel a seus amigos e esposas? Ele teve uma amante a quem ele foi fiel até o dia de sua morte: a Música. Nem por um só instante ele alguma vez comprometeu aquilo em que acreditava, aquilo com que sonhou. Não há uma só linha em sua música que pudesse ter sido concebida por uma mente pequena. Mesmo quando ele é tedioso ou simplesmente ruim, é tedioso e ruim em grande estilo. Há grandeza em seus piores erros. Ouvindo sua música, não se perdoa ele pelo que ele pode ou não ter sido. Não é uma questão de perdão. É uma questão de se ficar mudo de maravilhamento de que seu pobre cérebro e corpo não explodissem sob o tormento do demônio da energia criativa que vivia dentro dele, lutando, rasgando e dilacerando com as garras para sair, urrando para ele compor a música que estava em si. O milagre é que o que ele fez no pequeno espaço de setenta anos simplesmente possa ter sido feito, mesmo que por um grande gênio. É de se surpreender que ele não teve tempo para ser um homem?
