In the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination, leftist influencers began either blaming the Right for most of the political violence in America or calling for both sides to turn down the heat. It was a profoundly ironic moment, one that, thankfully, most conservatives and right-wingers saw through fairly easily. (more…)

There are plenty of minority constituencies that are relatively small in number but can still point to one or more elected officials who champion their interests and act as a public face for their cause. Libertarians, for instance, have Rand Paul in the Senate and Thomas Massie in the House of Representatives. For socialists, this role is played by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. (more…)

By now we have all heard about the shocking and tragic assassination of conservative pundit Charlie Kirk. For me it was a devastating turn of events simply because Charlie Kirk was part of the American Right—if not a brother, then a close cousin. I really felt the loss. Yes, he was mainstream. Yes, he was pro-Israel. Yes, he had made many bad calls. I’m sure quite a few of us would make bad calls now and then if put under the spotlight as often as Charlie was. (more…)

Recent events have steeled this author’s aversion and opposition to democracy. Universal suffrage is a bad idea, to put it mildly, and there is no better proof than recent developments in the presidential campaign for Kamala Harris. In denouncing democracy (direct or indirect), this admonition from Robert Heinlein in Starship Troopers bears repeating.
“When you vote, you are exercising political authority, you’re using force. And force, my friends, is violence. The supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived.” (more…)

Residents of Crook County, Oregon recently voted on joining the latest secessionist effort gaining steam within the rapidly-polarizing United States. The Greater Idaho movement seeks to incorporate up to 14 counties of eastern Oregon into the state of Idaho, which would extend Idaho’s border several hundred miles westward to the Cascade Mountains. One of the most common arguments against a National Divorce is that the states could not survive without federal funding. But why would one oppose red-state secession if red states are essentially charity cases? Why would opponents of red-state secession be so eager to continue funding people whom they openly despise? This is contrary to common sense and sounds like gaslighting in an abusive relationship: “You can’t live without me!”
The truth is that scarcely any money is “federal money” to begin with. (more…)

Talk of secession usually focuses on red states, but it can also apply to blue states, perhaps even more so. This is because Republican politicians have generally proven to have less political willpower than Democrats, so a Republican administration is less likely to be willing or able to stop a blue state from breaking off. In December of this year, Ilya Somin reviewed Christopher Zurn’s book Splitsville, USA: A Democratic Argument for Breaking up the United States, which was published in May. Somin offers several good-faith critiques of Zurn’s position on national divorce, and even praises Splitsville as “. . . the most significant, fully developed, and intellectually respectable, defense of the claim that breaking up the union is actually a good idea.” Somin’s main concerns are the feasibility and effectiveness of a national divorce. As a staunch proponent of national divorce myself, I would like to reply to Somin’s counter-arguments. (more…)
