A few days ago it was reported that 300 staff and students at Ghent University signed a petition demanding that Nathan Cofnas be removed from his position as a researcher in the university’s Department of Philosophy and Moral Science. The petition reflects a familiar pattern in contemporary academia: scholars who explore controversial questions are increasingly treated not as participants in debate but as targets for exclusion. The controversy surrounding Cofnas therefore says as much about the climate of academic discourse as it does about the subject of his research. (more…)

Nathan Cofnas first came to my attention in 2018 when he became the first mainstream academic to challenge Kevin MacDonald regarding his classic work of counter-Semitism, The Culture of Critique. He engaged with Prof. MacDonald point for point over the course of several weeks regarding the work’s merits and demerits, producing academic theater that was both tedious and fascinating; perhaps a little more of the latter. The tenacious Nathan Cofnas should be applauded for exposing Kevin MacDonald’s theory of Judaism as an evolutionary strategy to a popular audience. However, though his arguments appear insightful, it is evident that Cofnas has not succeeded in proposing a plausible alternative to MacDonald’s theory. According to the “default hypothesis” promulgated by Cofnas, Jewish involvement in influential movements that are not overtly anti-Semitic is explainable by higher IQ scores and concentration in urban areas.
