Last Sunday night, the world witnessed a black man being assaulted at the Academy Awards.
He was assaulted by another black man. Hopelessly complicating matters is the fact that the assailant was Will Smith, widely regarded as one of the most wholesomely antiseptic black celebrities on Earth.
In the late 1980s, when Smith, performing as part of duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, won the first-ever Grammy for Best Rap Performance in honor of their almost toothache-inducingly corny song “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” there was an unspoken cultural consensus that when it came to blacks and whites, there were very fine people on both sides. The brutal stabbing murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman on June 12, 1994 came during an era of unprecedented pro-black messaging in American pop culture. Whereas the Reagan Era had at least appeared to quell the racial turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s to a point where the sickeningly wholesome and pearly-toothed families on sitcoms such as Family Ties and The Cosby Show differed only in skin color, by the late 1980s Americans started being force-fed a steady diet of Spike Lee films, black-nationalist hip-hop via groups such as Public Enemy, (more…)
