American liberals are torn over our national symbols. On one hand, they claim them as their own and say they represent everything they love–multiculturalism, equality, anti-fascism, and DEMOCRACY. I’ve spent the last few days contacting friends in order to make plans for my upcoming birthday. I always try to make my birthday memorable, whether it be with a group of friends or by myself. Last year’s birthday was one that I would never forget, as I found myself singing a Polish folk song in a restaurant in Iceland while Antifa was burning an American flag directly outside. The Betsy Ross flag is now a “hate” symbol — and that’s a good thing.
The first flag of the United States of America became a controversial icon this week thanks to former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Nike cancelled its upcoming Betsy Ross shoe line after Kaepernick, a spokesman for the corporation, complained. He said the flag has a “connection to an era of slavery.” That argument was persuasive enough to nix the entire shoe line.
In the wake of Charlottesville, there has been much discussion about optics and the most effective aesthetic strategies for the growing White Nationalist movement. Andrew Anglin recently pronounced the Alt Right “dead” and implied that American symbology was the best path forward. He received instant blowback from many in the movement. (more…)
