If civilizations change over millennia, why does the modern world believe they can change in decades? Part of the answer lies in how difficult it is to understand societies fundamentally different from one’s own. Another lies in human psychology: intelligent people struggle to understand stupidity, and compassionate people struggle to understand malice. Raging wildfires have blazed nearly 12,000 hectares of planted and native forests in the Argentine Patagonia. These fires started in the province of Chubut, but the causes have not yet been established. There is a lot of hypothesis, and there are indications that one of the biggest fires was deliberately set (Associated Press, 2026). Last week, for the first time in too long a time, I found myself again in Rome. Europe is changing so rapidly that returning to once-familiar places no longer feels like a homecoming. It feels like entering an alien terrain for the first time. I perceived a similar sensation when I visited Ireland again after an absence of a few years. Shops and locales that I frequented have been closed down or replaced and renamed. (more…)
