Where would cinema be without its paid assassins, hired guns, and hitmen? The profession of hitman seems a fairly straightforward job description, but the great hitman movies both differ enormously and are far from straightforward. The target, the contract, the money, the hit, right? Wrong. These various tales of men hired to kill other men forms a genre which comes at you from different perspectives and in varied cinematic styles. (more…)

In light of the recent Dublin riots, I thought I would write something Irish-themed and settled on Troy Duffy’s The Boondock Saints, a cult Tarantino knockoff movie from 1999 with Irish-Catholic themes. In the process of researching this I discovered the documentary Overnight about the making of the film — which is actually a far more interesting movie in itself. You can watch it here.

Pulp Fiction Quentina Tarantina se řadí k mým nejoblíbenějším filmům. Nechtěl jsem, aby se mi líbil – původně jsem na něj dokonce ani nechtěl jít. Podle všeho co jsem o něm slyšel, jsem film měl za naprosto nihilistický a dosti odpudivý počin. The following text is a scrap rescued from obscurity and buffed up a bit. In 2002, a reader of VNN suggested that the site’s movie reviewers post their “Ten Best” lists. I found it impossible to settle on just ten best films. So I decided to produce a “Favorites” list instead. I came up with more than thirty movies. Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction
is one of my favorite movies. I didn’t want to like it. I didn’t even want to see it. Everything I’d heard made me think it would be thoroughly nihilistic and quite unpleasant. But then someone at a party described Pulp Fiction
as a movie about “greatness of soul at the end of history,” and that caught my attention, (more…)
