The recent passing of Queen Elizabeth II is a sad occasion. It’s comforting that she lived to an advanced age, however. Moreover, she remained physically able, kept her wits about her, and the end was peaceful and not prolonged. Fate was kind to her in that regard. I was shocked when, yesterday afternoon, a friend informed me that the Queen had died. I had only just heard a report that she was under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. A BBC news reader noted — twice — that she was “comfortable.” I didn’t like the sound of that, but I also didn’t expect that her death would come so soon.
I am at a loss for words. However, like most people lacking words, this has not stopped me from taking up my pen. I feel duty bound to mark this passing in some way. (more…)

Last week’s farcical events involving supposed flights of illegal immigrants from Britain to Rwanda for asylum application processing look at first glance like government idiocy. I suspect not. A rose by any other name
When I was growing up, or at least getting bigger, my parents were fairly liberal about swearing in the house. “Cussing” is, I believe, an American equivalent. This was not an injunction for or against swearing an oath on the Bible. But rules are rules, and there was always one word banned in our house: the dread C-word. How nice to be reminded of this childhood memory by Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), still wasting money after all these years. They have indeed banned the C-word. (more…)
