I appreciated Jesse Poe Holliday’s recent article about the struggles of young men to achieve manhood. He indeed captures the sense of aimlessness and cluelessness exhibited by so many young men today (and to be fair, young women are not showing up much better. Recent polls suggest that as many as half are rejecting motherhood, and I have seen reports that absurdly high numbers of young women are on some sort of anti-depressant of mood elevator drug.) William Carlos Williams ranked Cummings and Ezra Pound as “beyond doubt the two most distinguished” contemporary American poets. Part of my daily routine each morning is to read a verse from the Havamal. Roughly translated as “Sayings of the High One,” the Havamal is a 13th century Icelandic poem that provides advice and wisdom in regards to personal conduct, social interactions and pragmatic living. Each morning, I contemplate the meaning behind the verse I read and think about how I can implement its teachings into my daily life. Recently, these proverbs have reminded me of my father and the many life lessons he passed onto me. (more…)
