Jonathan Bowden’s Correspondence with Greg Johnson, 2009

Jonathan Bowden

4,490 words

Edited by Greg Johnson

Editor’s Note:

This is the first of four collections of my correspondence with and about Jonathan Bowden, from my first contact in 2009 to his death in 2012. I first corresponded with Jonathan in 2009, when I was the editor of The Occidental Quarterly. I was organizing a conference for that fall, in collaboration with Sam Dickson and the late Louis Andrews, then the president of the National Policy Institute. Jonathan was suggested to Louis and Sam as a speaker by a mutual friend, Adrian Davies. This is all the correspondence I have found, but I am not sure if it is complete. I was probably not copied on some exchanges between Sam, Jonathan, and Louis. Some matters were also discussed on the telephone, not by email. This correspondence is reprinted with the permission of Sam Dickson and Adrian Davies.

Greg,

I suggested Jonathan Bowden as a speaker. He is supposed to be first rate and knows Adrian Davies. We could check with Adrian about his qualities.

Dear Louis,

You had mentioned the name of an Englishman who might be a good keynote speaker. What was his name? What are his credentials?

Thanks,
Greg

Jonathan Bowden, he is a major speaker for the BNP. Adrian Davies knows him and will recommend him. Do a Google; he is all over YouTube. Check out his “Revolutionary Conservative” article via Google. Very well read. Has written 30+ books plus is a painter besides being an excellent speaker.

Dear Mr. Bowden,

I heard of your work through Adrian Davies and Louis Andrews. I am really impressed with your range of knowledge and skills as a speaker, writer, and painter. (I especially like the Adolf and Leni painting. Is that for sale?)

I wanted to introduce myself and the journals I edit: The Occidental Quarterly and the associated webzine www.toqonline.com. I would be interested in looking at some of your recent books for possible reviews in TOQ or on TOQ Online. I would also like to invite you to consider TOQ and TOQ Online as possible outlets for your work.

Dear Greg Johnson,

Thanks very much for your recent and warm-hearted e-mail. Yes, the painting entitled Adolf and Leni in the gallery section of the site is for sale and costs £250.00 or its equivalent in US dollars. (On current exchange rate figures, I estimate that this would be about $465.00 very roughly. But don’t take my word for this – given volatile economic conditions and the grotesque fluctuations of all Western currencies at the present time.) Given that you are in Georgia (possibly) the best way to pay would probably be PayPal sent to this e-mail address. I hope that Adrian Davies et al. would validate my complete scrupulousness in such matters. Obviously I could only send it to you rolled up in an addressed tube, or bring it physically with me if I’m invited to speak at the next conference of a certain society which has asked me to address them. This will take place in October—with Adrian Davies as the cut-out for this. He was probably asked to initiate such a contact on Louis Andrews’ behalf.

On the textual front, two reviews of books by me, Apocalypse TV and Kratos, have already been done by the well-known elitist or rightwing critic, Troy Southgate. Please feel free to make use of these in The Occidental Quarterly. As to actual books, all of my seven textual productions thus far are available for free download on the site or can be read on screen. The books themselves, averaging ten dollars or so plus postage, can be ordered from the Lulu publishing platform via my site. I look forward to hearing from you and shall probably write to you again next week.

Dear Jonathan, if I may,

Please set aside the Adolf and Leni painting for me, while I figure out how to buy it.

Do you do commissions? I am looking for an album cover for a CD anthology I am producing called The Savitri Diva Project, comprising interview bits by Savitri Devi plus songs by various volkish artists.

There are quite a few images of Savitri Devi on the Savitri Devi Archive: http://www.savitridevi.org/gallery.html

The borders on this page are somehow messed up, but it gives you the idea of what the project is about:

Subject: RE: Your Work/The Occidental Quarterly

Dear Greg,

Thanks for your e-mails of yesterday and earlier today. Yes, I certainly do commissions and I will think about doing images of Savitri Devi for a CD cover. Obviously the image has to be graphic and intense, but also (most importantly) it must be capable of reduction to a CD cover—itself a very small item. This leads to a graphic image—I will experiment with a few—maybe around A4, A5 or off-cut size, but images which could be scanned and sent to you over the ‘net. Alternatively, I could do several (given their size) and send one original to you in the ‘States. There are many images available of Savitri Devi (which means white goddess of knowledge and wisdom in Hindi). I’ll also explore certain other metaphors or instantiations—the image of Kali and Siva, as the principles of destruction and creation—could be carefully and subliminally explored. It might be interesting to use images of power from the most Aryan dimensions of Hinduism—most especially when we bear in mind that hardly any of her books could have been printed in their original editions inside Europe. (Censorship of various ideological positions is very intense here—there’s no First Amendment, and, as a point of interest, every public library, hotel business, port and the odd internet cafe bans access to The Occidental Quarterly, for example. A dun-coloured firewall comes up just like in the People’s Republic of China. The Labour government and its auxillaries refer to it as protecting the masses from ‘hate’.)

On other matters, I shall put aside Adolf and Leni for you. As to payment, my PayPal address is Jonathan Bowden

(In other words, it is exactly the same as this e-mail address. I believe that you can go directly to PayPal and convert a figure in dollars to one in pounds sterling (British) and then send it as a gift to someone whose e-mail address is likewise registered by PayPal. A small or fractional fee is paid for this. I shall obviously need a real time and non-virtual address to send the painting to you. I will endeavour to insure it (but that’s only a monetary safeguard) and it will have a prominent reverse address on it.

As to the painting’s dimensions—it’s quite large. It’s A1 in size: this computes to six times a sheet of A4 or standard writing paper. My rough computation is—imagine that it’s about a half to two-thirds of the size of an average door. It would certainly dominate an office, a fire-place or a relatively compact room.

I shall be in contact with you again next week. All the best.

Yours ever,
Jonathan Bowden

Dear Jonathan,

One question: what is the medium of the Adolf and Leni painting? Oil on canvas or something else?

I am waiting for a deposit into my PayPal account of some GBPs, and as soon as I receive it, I will send you the payment for the painting.

Regarding the Savitri image, two points: (1) I like the style of the Adolf and Leni painting a lot (Warhol in the New Order?) and it would be nice if the Savitri piece were similar. (2) If you draw upon any mythological imagery in your portrayal, remember that Saraswati, the goddess of the arts, is often portrayed playing a musical instrument, and this creative and beneficent side of the goddess should not be left out entirely. Although of course Savitri had a special relationship to Mother Kali.

All the best,

Greg

Dear  Sam G. Dickson,

Greetings from England! I have to say that I would be pleased to speak at the forthcoming gathering in Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend of the tenth and eleventh of October. So far Adrian Davies, who is known to you, has acted as a cut-out or intermediary in this matter, but I have now decided to contact you directly. I gather (again from Adrian) that the airfare will be met and I am looking at a flight from Heathrow on, say, the 8th of October from London Heathrow. This would leave about 8:30 AM and be with you sometime around noon (American time) after a flight of around 9.5 hours. The cost at this moment is around £328 with Delta airlines there and back—with a current exchange rate of about 0.6 this makes the transaction in dollars about $686. These fares are contingent on booking well in advance. I would be grateful if you could respond to the e-mail address below and give me a clearer idea over whether you will prepay/buy the ticket for me to travel out on, or reimburse me retrospectively, as well as other details about hotel accommodation, various people to meet me at the airport, et cetera. (I shall also forward a copy of this e-mail to Adrian Davies). If you wish to speak to me directly about any matter, please do not hesitate to use the following ‘phone number (if you possess an internet ‘phone which is free of charge especially):

+44 (0) 7731 648-615. (We are 8 hours ahead of you.)

On a purportedly lighter note, I am sure that you will be delighted to learn that every library and some internet cafes in this part of the world block access to The Occidental Quarterly’s details on-line. On approach a dun-grey firewall comes up just like in the People’s Republic of China. It is accompanied by the unmistakable moniker, ‘site of prejudice’—please see your librarian/provider, et cetera . . . I also gather, again through Adrian, that you know Tony Hancock well. Please feel free to give him my regards. I look forward to addressing your distinguished group later in the year. All the best.

Dear Greg,

Thanks very much for your recent e-mail which I received on the 25th of May. Yes, the picture Adolf and Leni is in mixed media, oil paint, art stick, heavy art crayon, ink and acrylic; it is also on heavily wove or creamy art-paper (size A1). Heavy art papers today are of such a quality—being both unacidic and substantial (130gsm)—that they can quite easily take oil and turpentine in a self-preservative manner unlike in the past.

When you have deposited the £250.00 (GB) in my PayPal account, how do you wish to receive the artwork? Do you wish me to send it to you in the United States in a tube? Or would you prefer me to bring it with me to Atlanta, Georgia for the conference in early October of this year? Adrian Davies (c/o either Sam G. Dickson or Louis Andrews) has confirmed that I will be attending this event as a speaker.

Dear Greg,

Talk about instant communication! I was just thinking that in the eighteenth century this communication that we’re having would have taken about eight months to get this far.

Yes, please feel free to put the Lovecraft article on-line at your earliest convenience. This also applies to any other of the written material on the site (which includes two long, informed and extensive reviews of books by me by Troy Southgate, a cultural activist).

On the Savitri Devi front, I will have hopefully completed by early next week a painting in mixed media/acrylic of her in an idealised-cum-pop art way. It’s a bit like Riefenstahl meets Tarantino . . . I shall endeavour to have Alex K. digitally photograph and send it as an attachment to an e-mail, or alternatively I will send a hardcopy of it to a designated address in the ‘States. (This would be a full-colour lasercopy, of course). It is A3 in size and therefore reducible to A5—approximately a cd cover.

We will reimburse you for your airfare and will provide you with your hotel room.

We will also pick you up at the Atlanta airport.

You should book your flight and we will reimburse you.

I may have a number of people go to my house in Key West (where David Irving stays in the summer) after the conference.

You might want to hold off on booking your flight until this solidifies. You would be welcome to join us.

I would be grateful if you can get back to me during June, say, about this. I also wish to thank you for inviting me and offering to meet me at the airport, provide a hotel room and reimburse my airfare. On matters of a topic(s), I would wish to concentrate on whether the much-vaunted Decline of the West has to be true or not? May Spengler be refuted at this late date, and if so—how? Perhaps a title like “Western Civilisation: a survivalist Guide” could serve as a starting-point. Another idea I have in mind, however, is the radical right’s intellectual tradition in the United States.

Dear Greg,

Sam G. Dickson has e-mailed me in order to confirm my trip over to the United States in October of this year. In relation to your remark about Klee, yes, although representationality is for me ‘the shock of the new’, I feel that any particular part of a modern painting will be abstract, particularly if focused on with absolute attention. I also have to say that Paul Klee did a remarkable and representative work about female madness called A Possessed Girl.

Please remember that, within reason, you can take across or abstract any of the articles, images or written pieces from my web-site (jonathanbowden.co.uk) and place them on the internet version of The Occidental Quarterly. By the way, do you possess Louis Andrews’ e-mail address?

Dear Greg,

The price for Adolf and Leni was £250.00 or its equivalent in US dollars—probably around $466.00 on the current exchange rate. Nevertheless, you made it clear some time ago that you were busy collecting British pounds (sterling) in order to defray the cost. Do you wish to send it to me via cheque, give me the currency straight upon meeting, send it via Paypal in pounds under the ‘gift’ category, or send an international cash transfer using a service such as Western Union? In the latter case, you would obviously need to join or already be a member of Western Union. I would then be able to collect the amount in cash from a Western Union office here in England upon presentation of a passport.

On a related front, you expressed an interest in a smaller work called Savitri Diva—this relates to Savitri Devi (obviously), is at present sight unseen, and costs £150.00. How do you wish to proceed on this one?

“I was just thinking that in the eighteenth century this communication that we’re having would have taken about eight months to get this far.”

!! That’s absolutely hilarious! I will be adding that to my repertoire. One thing I have learned from observing Greg Johnson is never be afraid to steal other people’s best lines. One of Greg’s best lines off the top of my head (for there are several) that I deploy regularly is – “what’s the difference between me and an African? 60,000 years of divergent evolution in a cold environment.”

As for the to-and-fro about the payment for the Leni and Adolf painting, poor bugger probably lived like a king for a day on that 250 quid. I have a theory that what broke Bowden is that he genuinely thought 2010 would be “our November 1932 election” so to speak. Bear in mind the BNP had gone from irrelevant minnows to leading news item and several MEPs in 2009, the backdrop being the Great Recession of 2008.

That didn’t materialise. In the 2010 election the BNP got nothing. Then the BNP sank into irrelevance and infighting.

As for when Dickson says “some of his work is not encouraging”, I imagine he stumbled upon the quite bizarre Punch and Judy film. Or maybe some of his weird, unreadable fiction. The Judy film is very weird indeed (let’s call it ‘arty’) and while I’m an open minded guy – I’ve sat through some Bela Tarr films, for example – it was a bit much for me. Maybe some meme potential – and maybe not in a good way.

But that’s not the best of Bowden. The speeches from the late 00s are still unsurpassed in my view and I just wish things had gone differently for him, and for all of us.
