This is great to see,
hopefully we will see far more counter-currents videos!
I loved the originals as a kid, enjoyed the prequel trilogy as an adolescent, but I’ll wait until this one comes out on torrent sites
Excellent summation Greg. I knew it was a rip off but until you boiled it down in this podcast I didn’t realize how big the rip off was of the originals. Is it me or does Luke Skywalker look exactly like Oliver Reed in Gladiator? A small correction Von Sydow is a German from Pomerania who gained Swedish citizenship later in life. Cheers.
Ike.
I want to read “The Catlady” review of this.
Lucas had a vision in the six Star Wars films for which he was responsible. But that vision has been blown to pieces more thoroughly by The Force Awakens than via any Death Star laser.
Lucas’ concept behind the trilogy was supposedly that episodes IV-VI would show the Rebellion, episodes I-III would show the Fall of the Republic, and VII-IX how the Rebels coped with the aftermath of victory and restoring the Republic–if that were even possible. i.e., would the forces (small “f”) which led to the failure of the Republic continue to be a challenge even though the Empire was officially overthrown?
Consider how Frank Herbert’s various Dune sequels show that Paul Muad’Dib’s Fremen rebels wrecked considerable havoc on the Galaxy, while his religion became increasingly corrupted. The solution was only in his son Leto taking the Golden Path and radically changing the course not just of politics but of humanity.
There was also a quasi-canonical meta-story behind Star Wars. In some accounts, Palpatine establishes the Empire as a means to defend humanity against a race of ferocious extra-Galactic alien invaders. All this could have been explored if any of Lucas’ vision had been left intact. Alas, the Force (big “F”) of Hollywood was against it.
