    Booking Problems at Hotel Rwanda

Steve Laws, a Briton and a citizen journalist who was arrested by the UK’s Border Force for documenting the ongoing migrant crisis along Britain’s Channel coast.

    2,751 words

It is a political axiom in contemporary Britain that there is no problem that Boris Johnson’s government can’t make worse. The supplementary lemma is: How much of it is intentional? Last week’s farcical events involving supposed flights of illegal immigrants from Britain to Rwanda for asylum application processing look at first glance like government idiocy. I suspect not. The Union Jackal, May 2022

British MP Jeremy Hunt, whose surname is as perfect an example of Cockney rhyming slang as you could find.

    2,490 words

A bad month for the Iron Lady and the suffragette

There is never a good time to be a statue in England. You are out in all weathers, for a start, and on the rare days the Sun does shine pigeons seize the opportunity to take a dump on your head. But you do usually get to hang around on your pedestal or plinth for a few decades, or even centuries, before you are abused by humans. That, like much in the old country, is changing, and 2020 shall henceforth be known as the year of the great toppling. But the last month has seen attacks on statues of two famous English women, proving equality is alive and well. (more…)

Jonathan Bowden on the Ravages of Mass Immigration

    4,221 words

Editor’s Note: This March 27, 2008, British National Party “stump speech” given in Tameside was transcribed by Hyacinth Bouquet. Sadly, the video is incomplete. If anyone has a complete version, or information about where it was filmed, please contact us at [email protected].

Every element that sustained prior forms of British English life is declining or has dipped down. Marriage and the family are in turmoil, and hardly anyone is marrying. (more…)

    The Union Jackal, February 2022

Beloved British cartoon character Peppa Pig has been unmasked as a horrible racist after being shown doing such unconscionable things as buying fiddles and attending an Irish dancing festival during a trip to Ireland.

    2,660 words

    Late to the party

There seems to be a political axiom whereby it is clear that a party or its leaders are in trouble when they start doing things, or at least start talking about doing things, which the majority of people actually want done. Thus, we see Angela Rayner, the blowsy Deputy Shadow Prime Minister, “talking tough” (translated from politico, that means horse-shitting) on crime. Ms. Rayner recently called Tories “scum” on social media. I don’t know where she thinks these mythical Tories are, but they certainly aren’t in the Conservative Party. (more…)

    England’s Heroes & Zeroes of 2021

    J. K. Rowling, who earned praise for getting herself cancelled this year by refusing to back down from her normal views on genitalia and gender.

    2,411 words

We can be heroes just for one day. — David Bowie

Hans, are we the baddies? — Mitchell and Webb sketch featuring Nazi soldiers

As European and Commonwealth countries act like faithful servants to the autocratic global coup currently taking place, my own home country of England has fallen into step like a good foot-soldier. The government, nominally Conservative but actually a sort of Green Socialist elite oligarchy, has gone full Bezmenov, contradicting itself on a daily basis about COVID and preventing its people from seeing dying loved ones while it parties maskless indoors. On the Ruin & Conquest of Britain, Part 1

    923 words

    Part 1 of 3 (Part 2 here)

(The title comes from De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae, a work written by the monk Gildas the Wise in the sixth century AD.)

While bumptious Boris leads a Tory bounce in the polls, Little Englander Brexiteers seem to have finally had their way, and the civic nationalists wear their molded-plastic Union Jack hats and wave their paper-thin flags with pride. (more…)

    Money, it’s a hit
Don’t give me that do goody good bullshit

    — Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon (1973)

It was not without a deep sense of irony that I recently came across Guardian columnist George Monbiot’s revealing article entitled “Dark money lurks at the heart of our political crisis,” a piece of investigative journalism that claims to provide an insight into the machinations of those who use cash to influence political outcomes.
